I've got 125 hours on my BX23. Recently it started gasping, like for air or fuel when I step on gas forward or reverse. I changed both fuel filters, cleaned air cleaner, cleaned gas cap to be sure it wasn't plugged. Interesting, revving up the engine (in neutral) and operating bucket and backhoe don't cause the problem at all, only when engaged to move. It's like the brake is on, or up against a wall. It caughs, and sometimes stalls. Starts OK. Seems like it's fighting itself, something to do with the drive. ????

Sounds like something is binding up. I assume you have checked the brakes. I guess it could be the drive train or transmission. If you place the transmission in neutral can you push the tractor easily?

Thanks Peters; yes, I can push tractor OK in N... I'm suspecting an intermittant seat safety switch wire short or some crazy such thing. Nothing else makes much sense. But it isn't like an intermittant, but happens when I press on the gas fwd or reverse.

You have not established it is not the HST. Have you over loaded it? With the 955 if you over load the HST it kicks open an overload valve and it will act similarly until the valve resets.
Additionally have you check the filter on the pick up tube in the tank? If it is clogged it will choke off fuel supply under load.

Since the other hydrolic systems work OK and engine runs OK at high rpm, I don't think it's fuel starving. HST isn't rulled out, but I don't know what else to check, PTO is disengaged, all other hydrolic systems work fine (backhoe, bucket, stabilizers).

The hydraulics run off a separate pump on the 955 so they are un affected by the HST. Only the time it boggs is when the you push the peddle.
Joe is right about the switch. It could just be a faulty switch or solenoid valve. If the valve is not opening fully it could also be restricting the fuel flow.
I guess you could check the switch by increasing the engine speed in neutral and moving on the seat.

Found the problem, thanks for the help. There are 2 switches under the seat at left front, one pushbutton to kill engine if out of seat, and a lever forward of that switch I think for disabling the kill switch when off seat using PTO. I believe there was once a small hard rubber pad cemented to the metal under the seat that engaged with the pushbutton kill switch. Mine is long gone. The seat can't possibly reach the pushbutton at it's full adjustment range. Had to hot-glue 3/16 inch piece of wood to underside of seat and then adjust the switch position.
I expect this might happen often. Glad it wasn't the HST...
