 HDL FILTER

was under my tractor last night and noticed that my hdl filter has a dent in it(not leaking thank god). this is still the factory filter on it. is it possible that the mower deck could hit it or is there enough clearance. or do you think this could be caused when the factory crated this tractor up on the metal skid. i know for a fact that i did not hit anything as i have only used my tractor on the lawn. plus the way the mark is(which is front to rear) not side to side i dont think the deck could have done this. i have the deck off so i cant tell how much clearance there is. also i cant see any impact mark just a dent? looks like the filter was blue before thay painted the rear end down the assembly line

 HDL FILTER

I put a big dent in mine while rolling the mower deck (somewhat carelessly) underneath the tractor. The mounting tab for the lift arms is tall enough to hit the filter if you shove the deck in without watching closely.

If the filter isn't leaking, you should be fine.

 HDL FILTER

You should always change a dented filter and never install a filter that is dented. Once the filter is dented, a concentration of stress in the metal is created, making the metal more susceptible to fatigue. The pressure pulses in the oiling system put stress on the metal canister. Filters are made from low carbon steel to with stand the stress created by the pulsing of the oiling system. In other words, When you bend metal back and forth, it work hardens the metal and eventually it breaks. The softer the metal, the longer it takes to break. Low carbon steel is soft and will take more bending before it breaks. The pressure pulses in the oiling system expand and contract the filter ever so slightly. When you have a dent in a filter, the metal in the dent is strechted which makes the metal thinner and harder in the dented area, which can make this area of the filter fail.
