i'm looking to buy a small tractor right now my options are a kubota l3400 kubota l2800 or a john deere 790. i have been priced a l3400 FEL and hydro for 15,800 and a l2800 FEL hydro for 14,600 and a jd 790 FEL for 14,600 and i don't really know a lot about the small tractors so i need all the help i can get. i will be using the tractor for (1)mowing the yard about (2)bush hogging (3)moving dirt, rock and anything thats heavy that gets in my way so what do you guys think would be the best choice. I want duribility and low maintnance, i know the l3400 has more hp but is the 5 hp worth a thousand more dollars since it and the l2800 are the exact same thing. thanks for all your help.

The hydro on the Kubota will be worth the extra money in the long run, especially when used as a loader/mowing tractor.

I agree that the hydro is great but they do cause a drain of hp. I think you want a minimum of 25 pto hp to easily handle a 5-ft brush hog so between these machines I'd probably go for the L3400 hydro. If budget is a huge issue the 790 would do. Dealer support is extremely important so factor that into your decision too.

I agree with the previous statements, however the difference in PTO HP between a gear model and a hydro is minimal. When you factor in the ability of a hydro to creep the HP difference swings in favor of the hydro. The L2800 has plenty of power to run a 5' cutter. The L3400 would just provide a little extra buffer.

I've been selling the 3400 hydro's with Bush hog squealer 84" twin spindles and the customers have all given good recommendations on the set up. They do run with the loaders on for front ballast.

What are they cutting? Tall grass and weeds is one thing, cutting 2-3" woody material is something else. Since we have a lot of woody stuff out here (vine maple, scotch broom) I think in terms of worst case.

They are in under growth that the first time they had to go slow just to see where they were going. Some stuff was about two to three inch diameter but only sapling maples and box alder trees with a lot of vines but after the first time mowed it turns to mostly hay to look at it now with thistle growing the fastest if not back within a month. The squealer will handle it as much as it is rated for only one inch stuff but to have a steady diet day in and out of it I'd recommend a heavier unit. Most times after a field has been fallow for several years the first time is the worst time.
