battery light gets red over 2000rpms

I was wondering if anyone ever had a slow blow fuse
go in a B2400 - hydrostatic. I have had this tractor
for about 10 years and I just had it stop on me in the
middle of the field. I got a few replacements and put
one in and it blew right away when I turned the switch
on. I found out that when I changed the oil, I accidently
bent the oil pressure gauge wire and it was touching
the filter. After I put it back where it was, the new
fuse worked fine. I do still get a red light coming on
during very hot weather on the battery picture on the
dash. I cant figure it out. I checked all the wiring
and everything appears fine. It only seems to happen
when it is very hot outside. Any thoughts out there?
I also checked the radiator, antifreeze, etc. and nothing
appears amiss.

I think I'd trace the wire connected to the coolant temp sending unit - and see if the other end might not be hooked up to that battery light. If so, your charging voltage might be connected to the temp indicator too.

Greg

Thanks for the info. I will check that out, but the
tractor was bought new by me so all the wiring is
original and it just started doing this this year
after I blew one slow blow fuse. I am not sure if the
red means a lack of charge or too much charge. Any
ideas?
thanks

Well, the universal interpretation of a red "charge" light is insufficient alternator output. But I'm not sure why it's only associated with hot weather. Maybe your alternator belt needs replacing. Perhaps it stretchs too much in the heat, which results in insufficient RPMs from the alternator. Just a guess, best I can do without putting a meter on the output.

Thanks again for the info. I will check the belt on
the alternator and I think I will get a new one and
replace it. It still has the original(600hours), so
it probably should be changed. I have tightened it a couple of times and it may be shot. I was thinking it was
over charging, because if I drop the rpm's down below
2000, the red goes out.
thanks

If you don't have a meter, you can pull the alternator for bench testing at an auto-electric shop. Sometimes there's no problem, and sometimes it's something simple like the diode set. Might turn out it's more cost effective to repair. If you do have a meter, http://www.inct.net/~autotips/altrn.htm should get you started. Tractors often need more engine RPMs than cars when performing these checks.

Alternates have a 3 phase ac output, running through a 6 diode full wave bridge and a regulator circuit to give you the DC output. You may have a weak diode in the bridge and when it gets hotter than normal it breaks down or stops conducting. If you take out one diode, the red light will come on, but the alternated will still put out about 75% rated output. The easies way to tell is pull the alternator and take it to a locale shop that has a test bench with an O-scope. They load it up and have an answer pretty fast. The bridge is replaceable in most units.
