 BX23 and Woods PHD

Hello everyone, I am new here and to tractors!

I am looking to buy a sub-compact and I had pretty much decided on a Kubota BX23 with the FEL and BH. I will be doing landscaping and yard work - moving rock, digging a fish pond, planting trees and putting in a fence on a 1 acre residential property.

As far as I can tell, Kubota does not provide a post hole digging attachment for the BX23. I have found that a company called Woods does provide a PHD attachment for sub-compacts. I am a little concerned that to get the PTO rpm of 540 needed for the PHD the BX23 seems to need to run at 3068 engine rpm. Is this a problem?

Also, does the BX23 have a limited cat. 1 3-point hitch or a proper cat. 1 3-point hitch? What are my chances of finding a rental PHD that will fit the BX23 at a later date?

I am trying to make sure I don't make a purchase and find out later I can't do something I thought I could. :^)

If I were to consider a different sub- or compact tractor and purchase all Woods accessories (FEL, BH etc) does anyone have any suggestions - perhaps a Kubota B-series or something else?

So many questions!! I very much appreciate any help from people with experience and knowledge!

Thanks,

Kevin

I have a land pride ph10 on my BX it fits perfectly. I think it is very similar to the woods. I usually dig at just above idle. There is no need to run the thing wide open to dig post holes. It is either going to dig or not dig depending on how hard the ground is. I reccommend you by it with carbide tips if you are going to dig in hard ground.

You should have no problems running a PHD with your BX, especially if you get one that is sized to the limited height/lift 3 point hitch.

BTW, that is the "limit" in the limited cat 1 hitch..... lift height.

The BX engine is designed to run at a max rpm of 3600 and limited in this application to 3200 (I think), so turning at 3100 is not any sort of strain. And there is nothing that says you can't run the auger at a slower rpm.

I ran a full sized cat 1 PHD on my BX with little trouble. The actual auger blade was longer than the than the one that would come on a sub-sized model and it would occasionally drag on the ground during transport over rough ground.

Another thing I have found is that once I got a backhoe I had little use for a post hole digger.

As far as looking at other models, the BX23 package would be real hard to beat in terms of price and utility for the amount of land you intend to work.

Thank you both for the excellent replies. You have given me the confidence to press ahead with a BX23 purchase.

I had checked the archives and found a post which also described how the backhoe could be used to dig post holes.
