finally found something I hate about my bx23

I'm usually a big kubota fan, but today for the first time I was really annoyed: I found a part I would expect to be a standard size (the 3pt top link) isn't standard.

Got my bx23 over the summer but never needed the 3pt hitch till the snow started. Realized the top link piece was misplaced (my fault). Picked up a standard Cat 1 top link locallly -- it doesn't fit. It would fit except for being a wee bit too wide to fit the tractor. Returned it and tried a Cat 0. It fit but it was too small for the pin to fit in.

Ok, I'll buy a Kubota brand replacement part. Drove out-of-town to the Kubota dealer. They tried to sell me a no-name Cat 1 top link... but I told the guy it wouldn't fit. He finally gave in and tried it on their display model & sure enough it didn't fit. Rather than listen to a dumb customer, he proceeded to ignore me and try to sell me their generic brand Cat 0 toplink. I refused till he could show me it would fit. Guess what, it didn't fit either.

Turns out the dealer doesn't stock the nonstandard toplink. They can order it in for me in a few weeks and for only about $65 (vs a generic Cat 1 was $20)

My rant is with Kubota -- why in the world couldn't they use a standard toplink?

And two thumbs down to my Kubota dealer for pushing a non-kubota part in a situation where only a Kubota-brand part would fit.

Thanks for listening to me rant. I feel better getting that off my chest.

P.S. I still love the bx23, but I'm always puzzled by corporate stupidity.

Wouldn't a little ginding make the non standard fit ? I know not the best plan but it would get you by if you needed it now. Heck it might even work out just fine. I know you needed to rant, I am glad you did. The guy I just got my tractor from cant seem to find the it. Would have done the ebay nasty and been grinding my teeth and top link. Smile

A touch with the grinder will narrow the link, but it is still several inches too long.

Yea, my only gripe too. I guess if you put on a set of Pat's Easy Change lowers, then the genaric top link will work.

I'm saving my pennies for a CCM TnT kit instead and to heck with it.

Include Massey Ferguson in your rant too... they use the same dimensional top link on their subs'......

The Cat 0 link will work if you get some 5/8ths to 3/4 shims from a tractor supply (a standard item) and use a good grade 5/8th bolt.

Shim the receiver sleeves on the tractor and size the bolt so there it pulls the whole thing together with threads left over.

If the link itself is a bit too long, cut about 1/2 inch off each end of the link body. There will still be enough female thread for ample holding strength.

In case you haven't guessed, I used to have a BX.

I had the same issue a couple of months ago, I was shoving some stumps and the box blade rolled up on top of the stump and I bent the top link just a bit so it would not shorten all the way. I posted here, wondering about an after market part and got the same history as this post. I did find a cat 1 top link at the John Deere dealership with an eleven inch barrel, ground off about a sixteenth on each side of one end of the attachment for the tractor mounted end and it was good to go. Cost $19. I think most tractor supply stores can order Cat 1 links that are the same approximate length as the Kubota, but they will have to be ground down a tiny bit in order to mount them on the tractor -- there is no problem with the implement end.

Your complaint is not new as farmers have had trouble with the Cat 1-2 hitches as well as the cat 2-3 when needed. Yours is a Cat 0-1 hitch.
