 Tire Chains L48

Anyone out there have any experience trying to get tire chains for the L48 rear tires. There is VERRY limited clearance(About 1 1/2 inches)between the inner fender and the inside tire sidewall. I tried a set of Pewags but to no avail...They said I can have them custom make a set but would like to see if someone has already tackled this problem..A friend of mine has a 4330 with the same tires and problem so it may not be just an L48 problem...Tires are 17.5Lx24R4 industrial lug.

Moose, a big part of the problem you are having is because of the tires themselves.

Kubota put 17.5x24's on those machines in an effort to keep the backend from sinking from the extra weight of the B/H when working in soft soil conditions. Unless you are working in soft conditions regularly there is no need for that width.

Also, unless your friends 4330 has non-standard tires on it they will be 14.9x24's, the same basic tire, just 3'ish inches narrower.

We also have had our share of issues with chaining tractors for snow work, certainly those fat back tires won't help either, in fact every inch of tire means that much less traction.

We finally ended up modifying our chains by shortening the cross-links and replacing the portion of chain that runs along the sidewall of tire with aircraft cable on the inside ends. Just be sure that the side chains are far enough in towards the hub that they don't contact the fender either. I have seen other people do this and even make tensioners that go through the rims to pull the side chains in tight.

IMHO, the first thing you should do is get a smaller tire, that will help solve both the traction and the clearance issues.

Best of luck.

Moose, same thing with my JD 110, no clearance behind the tires at all. I wouldn't even attempt chains on this one. I'm sure the same reason the L48 has such tires as Murf explained.

Thanx for the info..I looked into changing the tires to the 14.9x24's(same Height, just narrower)..but...the L48 uses an 8 lug 15 inch wheel..The 14.9's use a 6 lug 13 inch wheel....If all else fails I will definately look into the aircraft cable fix...

There are a few alteratives to your problem. Have your local dealer or you can check into wheel spacers, this is what i would recommend to you. I think all you would need is about 1" to do the job. Another alternative, check into a set of rims and hubs for an L5030 Kubota. These have the 8 bolt lug pattern that your L48 does, they have adjustable dishes that your L48 doesn't, and they use the same tires. Just have to have the rubber swapped over. Hope this helps, Doc.
