 Clutch Adjustment

I've been trying to tweek my clutch adjustment to eliminate a subtle "grind" when I engage the rear PTO. I adjusted the free-play in the pedal to about 1", and also adjusted the travel stop as close as I could to the 11/32" recommneded. I still get a little gear grind when I engage either pto. Anyone found a good way to eliminate this? I don't want to go too far with the pedal travel adjustment, but am tempted to go a little beyond spec. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

 Clutch Adjustment

There is only one way I know of, patience.

The subtle grinding you are hearing is because the gears are still spinning on one side but not the other, if you wait a few seconds before trying to engage the PTO it will give the gears time to slow or stop.

The other thing that helps is to engage the PTO with the engine at idle. With the tractor in neutral, and before you step on the clutch, bring the engine to a slowe idle, then step on the clutch, wait a moment, then engage the PTO, this will ensure the gears are turning as slow as possible, if at all. That should minimize the problem.

Best of luck.

Thanks Murf. Pretty much done all those things except nuetral on the range shift. I'll try that. Hearing those gears engage is painfull for me. I ran that PHD all summer without even a clunk. This started during the leaf harvest this fall with the RFM. The clutch adjustment helped, wondering whether I had overlooked something.

By the way, patience is not one of those virtues that was in large supply when the good Lord rolled me off the assembly line. I think they were having one of those parts shortages that day. My wife could cetainly testify to that!
