 Stolen tractor registry

Does a registry exist for stolen tractors? A really good deal has popped up and it would seem reasonable to verify that it is not stolen. Where would that be? Everyone wants orange!

I've been in the buisness for quite some time and we do get notifications from insurance companies of stolen equipment from some of them. I'm not sure of anyone making a list to send out. Your local sherrifs office probably does or might have a contact to help you. Good thing to check on!

Local police should have hot sheets that formerly covered state/provincial areas. In this day and age there's no reason why they should be integrated nationally or even internationally but I've been out of touch with the subject for awhile.

I mostly know this stuff though my sound/lighting buz days. I never bought used equipment from an individual unless I got a copy of a bill of sale for it and also checked that any financing was paid off. A buyer is responsible for returning stolen property to the owner without compensation and also is responsible for outstanding debts or encumbrances. A buyer who acted in good faith only has the option of suing who they bought it from. If it's stolen chances are that it was bought from a bozo who has no assets and is therefore judgment proof.

Buying from dealers is a little different because they're suppose to carry out the same checks that are a very good idea for anybody buying from a private individual. Checking with local police is good documentation that a person is acting in good faith so they don't end up being held as authors of their own misfortune.

We have such a database here in Canada, in fact it is a category of a national database of stolen property which the public can search. It presently has contains over 185,000 vehicles and 485,000 items in total listed.

It includes almost anything from bicycles to snowmobiles to heavy construction equipment. There is a seperate category for farm equipment, my insurance broker tells me there is more farm equipment stolen than you might think. When he explained it from a 'crook's point of view' I guess it makes sense, the equipment is not likely to be exposed to much public scrutiny like cars or trucks and the buyer is likely to keep it for long time.

This coupled with the lower incomes, etc., in recent years which might make stolen farm equipment more attractive financially even if the buyer new it was stolen.

The high demand for CUT's, and therefore prices, has made them a very attractive target lately, a few of my customers have had losses in the last few years.

Best of luck.
