 pricing secrets?

I've been looking to upgrade my equipment for the last 20 years but have always found the prices confusingly high. For example, for comparison, in our area (Chicago), a garden tractor, 20-23 hp, hydrostatic, with a belly mower, can be had for about $2,000.

A recent quote for a new Kubota BX24 with front loader and backhoe was $16,800 delivered (20 mi.). Is this a good price and why?

I would like to negotiate a package deal. It would be helpful to know the dealer cost similar to information available when buying a car. Does anyone know a source for such information?

There is nothing for tractors like with priceing cars. The best sheets I've seen on cars you have to pay for and they really get good. The manufacturers will normally have their programs listed on their web sites. The Garden tractor you referenced for the money would be called a lawn tractor not a garden tractor. True garden tractors sell for double that or more on the economy side. What are you getting with it for the 16,800?

Thanks Art for the reply. I'm already familiar to the difference between a garden tractor and a lawn tractor since I own both kinds. They both have the same engine,18 hp twin cylinder, but the garden tractor (MTD) is bigger and stronger.

Lawn tractors are even cheaper. Farm & Fleet sells a 20 hp, hydrostatic with a 42 in mower at their regular price of $1,350. I don't mean to use these as a comparison.

I referenced the garden tractors earlier solely as a benchmark at what $2,000 can buy. Although the current versions actually have more hp than the Kubota BX24, these garden tractors don't come in 4wheel drive and aren't strong enough for FEL and BH.

Anyway, the BX24 I'm looking at would come with FEL and BH. What would be a great price on this configuration from a buyer's point of view?

The reason for the difference between the lawn tractors and a utility tractor (even if it is a compact or sub-compact) is that a lawn tractor is an assembly of 'off the shelf' parts fitted together to make a push mower a mower you can sit on. They use 3rd party engines and put then atop a light frame. The power linkages are often belt connected as this affords easy adaptability and minimal cost (usually at the expense of longevity). A utility tractor is a completely integrated unit using parts designed specifically for that tractor in mind. Powertrain connections are usually mechanical and solid (as opposed to belt driven). There is far more engineering that goes into a tractor.

=====
1*Hp is a long ways from the full story.
When the tractor don't have the Beef/ muscle to handle it you don't have much other than a high powered motor on wheels.
2* What I paid for mine
BX23 Ag tires $8100 FEL$2300 BH$3800 60"MMM$1300 .total$15500

Thanks lbrown59 for the prices you paid. Can you tell me what year that was and what part of the country?
