 freezing steering on DK35SE

Hi there;
I have a DK35SE that is two years old with 238 hours on it. The hydrolic oils have been changed three times and the engine oil five times. When the weather turns cold here in NB, the steering freezes solid. You cannot turn the steering wheel at all. After the tractor warms for twenty minutes all is good. My dealer says water in the oil. I say fooee to that. The oil has been changed and looks presteen. Regular changes should take care of any condensation. The tractor is in an unheated garage, no heat at all. Has anyone else had this problem? If so how did you fix it? I like this little tractor and don't want to trade it yet. But will if I can't fix the problem.

Hi. I'm sure you've checked that the fluid is exactly what Kioti calls for.

I'm increasingly convinced from what I read that if you have one you better be on good terms with a nearby dealer, so I wouldn't try to strongarm him. You could google "hydraulic fluid analysis" and send a sample (they provide a sample container). That should prove there's no water contamination and get them to troubleshoot and fix.

I suspect what you are getting is not water freezing, but the hydraulic fluid is thick enough that cold weather is causing enough extra pressure to cause the pressure relief valve to open.

If that happens there is no hyd. pressure to the steering rack. Sort of like trying to turn the wheel before starting the engine.

What weight hydraulic oil are you running?

Best of luck.

It has nothing to do with the hydraulic fluid.
What is happening is...There is a lip on your power steering motor which is located in the dash, this lip retains a puddle of water and it freezes.
To prevent this from happening you can either take it to the dealer and he should be able to take care of it or you can remove the steering colum panel loosen up the steering motor tip it out clean it off, blow that exis water off and build the area up with regular grease.
Problem solved!
