 2210 Filter(s) and "Winterizing" questions...

A few months ago, you guys helped me decide which JD was right for my situation. The 2210 is perfect. I have several questions.

Winter's approaching. The tractor lives in my currently unheated pole barn. I've got a battery-tender to help maintain the battery.

ENGINE OIL:
What viscosity & grade of engine oil do you recomend (I will be using the tractor for snow removal occasionally).

FILTERS:
Is there a source for good quality oil filters aftermarket or maybe the stock filters somewhere on the internet? Can I get a Yanmar, Wix, NAPA or other filter, or do I "need" to use a JD part.

FUEL ADDITIVES:
Do I need to use any type of fuel additive during the winter to reduce the chances of "gelling"?

Thanks...

We sell use and recommend Power Service as a fuel additive. In your climate you could use a 15w40 if you would like for oil. There are many brands of oil and it is hard to find the exact specs for oil as to the quality. During the average time of ownership chances are there would be little difference as to the life of the engine as far as you are concerned. Filters are different as to the quality of the filters ability to filter. Many filter are interchangable but I perfer the factory originals or there recommended filter.

I use JD filters except for engine oil where I use a Fram PH3593 filter - about $3 at Walmart. I also change oil at 50 hours which averages about every 10 weeks for me.

Mr. Simonson: If you ever have the chance, cut open one of the Fram filters and a JD, Fleetguard or other OEM filter and compare them. You'll probably never buy another Fram filter.

We sell Jd and Farmoyl at our store. Farmoyl has a really nice oil called premier 2000. It is a partial synthetic and a 10-30 probably flows better than a straight 10 wt. the price is only about 1/3 more than regular oil. We use the same oil in our pickups and our shop tractor that sits outside on nights that get down to -20 below. You can really really tell the difference. Not sure where you live but if you can find a farmoyl dealer you will be very happy.
Another trick you might think of is buying a magnetic oil pan heater. I'm pretty sure that the pan has a "flat spot" that you could stick one on. You could put a timer on the heater to come on about 2-3 hours before you might use it in the morning. It will warm from the bottom up and really really get the oil flowing fast.
