 JD 755 "waterpump"

How difficult is it to replace a waterpump in a JD 755 tractor. JD mechanic says it would take him about an hour, @$40.00 an hour. Mechanic also said he would not remove the radiator because he doesn't have a problem working in cramped spaces. I do, is there any difficulty removing the radiator. If I don'tsurely I will poke a hole in it. Another question. JD mechanic thinks the reason for having to replace the waterpump at only 746 hours, is a seal has dried out from none use. Could I just have this bearing pressed out, replace the seal. Instead of buying a (remanufactured) waterpump? Which is safer to do?Thanks for any helpDavid

The JD mechanic might be right. At only $40.00/hr I'd not only let him do it, I'd buy him lunch as well. The usual reason for a leaky waterpump is that the bearing has angular play which allows the fanshaft to operate at a slight angle and wears out the seal. A typical rebuild is as you describe: always both the seal and bearing are replaced and sometimes the fanshaft as well (because it can be scored). Radiator fins do not contain water, and can be bent and straightened many times without affecting the vertical tubes within the radiator - which is where the water flows. If this seems a worry, a sheet of thin cardboard taped to the radiator will protect the fins completely. Support your local mechanic. Roger
