Can any one tell me anything about the JD 850.Engine HP typical feature, transmission types Manufactured bettween xx and xxKnown problems ?If any one has any pictures of this model I'd appreciate that too.A local dealer might be getting one in as a trade up so I am just doing my home work on this compact to see if it may be a good buy. The dealer is speculating that it will probably be priced at about $8500.I am also considering very seriously a Kubota 2250 for $10,500. Any thoughts out there both have loadersThanks in advance David

I own an '87 850 mfwd. Excellent tractor. Gear Drive. 4 fw speed 1 reverse. Hi/lo range on transmission. I have a bush hog loader operating on the tractor hydraulics and it works fine. Also have a Kelley 650 backhoe (Kelleys smallest) with a PTO hydraulic pump. The tractor handles it with no problem. HP is in the 20-24 range.I use it for just about all tasks around our small horse farm and it does just fine.

Hard to go wrong either way. My own preference is to lean toward the 850. The entire gear drive line from JD from the 650 to the 1050 are excellent. If they have a common flaw it is that they could be ordered without the power steering option. It is an external setup, and costs about a grand to add it to a used machine. And is well worth it. Since both machines have loaders I'd go with whichever one has power steering and is in the best condition.

Made between '78 and '88, about 24 HP, 22 PTO HP if I remember correctly. Made by Yanmar. Early models have a single stage clutch and a de-compression system for easier cold starting. Later models have a two-stage clutch, no decompression, and an external hydraulic oil filter under the right footrest. Available in 2 and 4 wheel drive.I have an early model 2wd and like it very well. It doesn't have power steering, but it doesn't need it, as I don't have a loader. I wish it had the two stage clutch, as it would make brush hogging easier in the heavy stuff. It handles a 5' cutter with no problems.Parts are readily available at my local JD dealer. All I've had to do is routine maintenance.

Don't know anything about the Kubota. I have an '88 JD850. Had it five years and put about 100 hrs/yr on it. 4wd,pwr steering,"orchard tires,"loader, small back hoe, bush hog, etc. Absolutely the best for general use. Never had one real problem with it. Use it year 'round to dig and move trees (up to 50'), blow snow, clear brush, move rocks, and, yes, even cut grass. If it's in good shape, you will never regret it.
