 John Deere 950 Clutch

I am looking at purchasing a JD 950. I have been told that the clutch needs to be replaced. I have the mechanical skill to fix it, but I wanted to get an idea of what kind of job this is going to be. If anyone has done this type of work or similar type or work please respond.

Also if I buy the manual for this tractor will it give me enough information to perform the job?

I think it would be a big but doable job, but I've never done it. The JD technical service manual for my 4310 is pretty good and gives step by step instructions for most service areas so the 950 manual is probably about the same. I'd recommend the parts manual too - it's good to see breakdowns of how things go together and what all the part numbers are.

The clutch on a 950 is fairly simple to do. Depending on how old it is, you could have a single stage clutch or a dual stage. There are a couple of special tools involved for adjusting the fingers and for aligning the clutch disks. If it is a dual stage clutch, the parts are pretty expensive from the dealer. There are probably some aftermarket parts available but I don't know if the quality would be as good. If you need to replace the entire clutch assembly, be prepared for over $1500.00 at the dealer for parts. Keep this in mind when negotiating the price of the tractor. Good Luck!!

In addition to the special tools; do you have the hoists to support and separate the tractor halves?

Even if you are only going to do it once, making a rolling support for the tractor to be split on can make the job a lot easier and safer.

Basically you want a stout stand to support the back half in place, then a small track on which another stout stand holds the front end up, pipe works nicely for all of it. When the tractor is unbolted, just roll the front section forward, swap the clutch and roll them back together again.

Be sure to get the alignment and adjustments correct too or you may be replacing it again real soon.

Best of luck.

I have done a 1050 clutch and Murf is right. Make some good rolling stands first. I assembled a back one fixed in place and a manueverable one utilizing a rolling jack. It wasn't overly complicated but definitely involved. Good luck.

And yes manual photos and illustrations do help.
