How can you tell when your tractor was manufactured?

I just purchased a JD 2210. I would like to know when the tractor was manufactured. I sent John Deere the Serial Number from the side of the frame and I got the following reply... If anyone knows how, could they please let me know who to contact or what to do.

Thanks, TOM

Dear Mr. Clements:

Thank you for contacting our Web site. John Deere does not track specific dates of manufacture on our equipment. The 2210 was introduced in 2002 - hopefully that helps.

If we can be of further assistance, please call the Customer Contact Center at 1-800-537-8233. Our Center is open 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. ET, Monday - Friday and 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. ET, Saturday.

Thank you,
Vicki

How can you tell when your tractor was manufactured?

From past discussions JD's response is surprising. JD owners have said that they obtained date of production as well as date and place of sale from JD--maybe there's been a policy change. I know that date as well as production shift and other information is built into the serial number on my Ford and I think most tractors were like that--perhaps until recently.

I still think that there's virtual certainty that any manufacturer would have pretty good tracking info on a tractor. Otherwise how could assembly plant or OEM supplier defects be identified? If there are safety defects found or PIPS, how could recall notices be issued? Production changes are fairly common so how would a dealer know which parts to order except from the serial number?

I accept that tractors don't have new models every year and maybe the reality in these days of 'virtual manufacture' is that 'year' becomes an obsolete concept. Still, it really is not very believable that JD doesn't know the date and assembly plant a tractor came from or was delivered to dealer. Maybe a different question would receive a better answer.

I find JD's response to be, well, unbelievable. tractortips dot com lists serial numbers for year of production for all the JD tractors I've looked at. Unfortunately they don't yet list the 2210. I'll bet any JD dealer could give you the year of production with your serial number. We have found over and over that emailing questions to JD tech support usually results in an unsatisfying response.

When JD issues a PIP they state both the range of serial numbers affected and the dates of production, so they have to have this information.

How can you tell when your tractor was manufactured?

That's ridiculous that JD said that, they need to know the year of a tractor for finance reasons among others. Don't the need such info. when importing these smaller tractors as well? I bet hey have this somewhere in a file with dae of sale listed. If not, how the heck are they going to tell if my repair is covered under warranty if I move halfway across the country? Manufacturers of most big ticket items can tell you plenty of info. on anything the make and later sell. Certainly they aren't going to rely on my receipt, they get lost and dealers do go out of business, so there MUST be a backup system.

When you buy a used car you can call the manufacturers customer service to see if the warranty is still expired/valid (not voided due to owners modifications, etc) The can tell you manufacture date, sales date, delivery date and usually warranty repair info. as well, it must be the same or similar with tractors.

If JD is going to rely on my paper receipts for date of manufacture/sale I think I just got a LIFETIME warranty as long as the keep making my model Wink yeah right Seriously though, I would call someone else at JD, it sounds like you got a moron. Certainly the finance department might have better info. on waht year tractor they loaned you the $$ on. I can't picture JD finance going to court and telling the judge they want the $$ they loaned MR. xxxx for a tractor and then stating they can't tell what model year it was????

Maybe that's an idea....if all else fails stop paying them and then when they file a claim it should have the model year listed on it Smile Smile

I got the same exact canned response from JD when asking the same question. I was surprised since there were people on this web site that said they had access to that information.

I'm starting to recall the stories now. The people who said they received very detailed info about their JD's may have said they got it through a dealer. Seems like a decent bet that dealers have access to info that customers don't.

If that's true, at least NH CS said to contact my dealer when I asked them a tech question that I figured a dealer would have without checking with their tech rep. About a month later I got a call from CS asking if I was satisfied with my dealer's response--I was. Maybe the question asked of a dealer would get a better answer.
