JD 4100 Post Hole Digger Choice

I have a JD4100 tractor. I would like to purchase a Post Hole digger. I'll use it for some 6" posts, but I'd really like to use a 24" auger for landscape use. It looks like JD recommends the Frontier PHD200 (up to 12"Wink yeah right or the PHD300 (up to 24"Wink yeah right, although I couldn't find any cost or availability on the web. Can the 4100 drive a 24" auger (some rock), and are there other suitable brands I should consider? Thanks, wag

24" is huge for a PHD especially on a 4100. I have a Land Pride PD25 with a 9" auger bit. You don't want to go too big on the auger bit as you will sacrfice digging power. In your case I would recommend the PD10 or 15 series PHD.

If it can turn a 12" auger you will be lucky. Small tractors don't have the HP to turn large augers. I have used 20hp Mini skid steers with 30" augers, but they are hydraulic driven with gear boxes. My b7500 21/16hp had a 12" auger when the orignal owner bought it, he took it back because it had trouble turning it. Unless you live in FL, sand it easy, but clay and rock will kill you.

I have a 12" auger and use it with 24 pto hp in sandy soil that does have some rocks. Power for digging is OK and power requirements can be reduced a bit by riding the 3ph lever. I don't think I'd want to use a bigger auger with my hp though.

What I've noticed is that the engine can lug trying to pull the auger up when clearing dirt out of the hole. In the situation the engine is running both the pto and the hydraulics and there's not enough hp. I don't know if the cause is the amount of dirt on top of the bit or the slightly curved hole a 3ph auger digs if it isn't pulled up sometimes. It most likely the amount of dirt. It only happens in soft sand when the auger digs fast enough to drop like a rock. I usually pull it up frequently with care not to let the tip come out of the hole. An auger can really band a 3ph around and I don't know if large sized bits makes the problem worse.

Experience has taught me that not all PHD's will fit on a 4100. Before you buy it make sure the boom arm does not bind up against the seat bracket.

In addition to Mark's very practical consideration, some compacts also have ground clearance problems. Some 3ph's won't lift some larger augers high enough for the auger tip to clear the ground. Most augers have three mounting positions for the yoke that adjust the auger height and that cures most clearance problems. No guarantees though. My dealer shipped the auger to me with an understanding that I could return it if there wasn't enough clearance.
