JD 4310 rear PTO mechanical disengage

New to the board but not new to JD!
I just bought a 2003 JD 4310 and need some help on hooking up a finish mower to the 3-point hitch. I have a e-hydro transmission and I can't seem to find a lever to actually disengage the PTO to allow me to line up to the splines on my driveshaft. On my old 855 JD you could move a lever to a "nuetral" position to allow you to freely rotate the rear PTO shaft.
I ended up engaging and disengaging the PTO like 20 times before I happened to land on the right spline orientation... what a pain!
Thanks for the help friends!

I have always twisted the impliment drive shaft to align it to the pto shaft. Never had much trouble doing it that way. I can see that if you could not turn the impliment drive shaft for alignment where that might be a problem. Can you hook up everything to the 3 pt. hitch and then lift the mower off the ground and then turn the drive shaft for alignment?

Bob I have tried several times to get the stupid thing to turn The only way I have done it is to have tractor running and release PTO brake and let the shaft creep or help it by manually turning it. I do not recommend this I have seen to many 1 armed farmers in this life time.

IT IS A PISS POOR SET UP WHEN ALL OF THE REQUIRED SHIELDS ARE IN PLACE!

My 3ph mower deck you will not turn with the pto shaft by hand. But I have all the deck shields removed to facaliate cleaning with leaf blower when done mowing. I can hold the pto shaft and roll the pullys with my foot.

Most of my other pto stuff will turn by hand.

I don't have a PTO brake on my old Ford and can't say I miss it from all I've heard. I also seem to recall that it's good to coast big mowers down slow idle rpm before shutting the tractor down or the brakes can turn into expensive repair items. I wonder if there's some way to get more leverage for turning an implement by hand. Maybe one of those strap wrenches would clamp onto the pto shaft somewhere, but probably not since those shields sure are safe.

I have everything hooked to the 3Point and can raise the implement, but the belt mower drive belt slips before it ever gets to the gearbox to turn the shaft. Looks like there no easy way to disengage the PTO via a lever or mechanical means. Thanks for the input and I look forward to reading other handy tips from the forum.
Bob

On the larger farm tractors many of the makes have introduced the ability to free wheel at least a 1/4 turn. I think it will come to compacts with the hydraulic clutches. Many of the hydro's can be turned on the older units before the hydralic clutch packs came into play..
