My brother just purchased a 955 ser # LV0955D181036 which he said they represented as having a 40hp engine. While this tractor has a loader and backhoe I didn't think they had 40hp, anyone know of this option.

I came up with 27 hp as well from an 87 cubic inch Yanmar. I think they sellers fell kinda short on the hp assessment. Still a nice tractor. What year and how many hours were on it, and over all condition was it in? What did he pay for it? ....

Sounds like he did good! The tractor is more than likely a 1998 model with so few hours on it and the tractor is worth around $11,500. If the loader, backhoe, snow blade, and mower are in good shape, not a bad price at all. ....

Based on the serial number phwiker posted, tractortips data indicates it's a 1995 model. I don't know how accurate that data is though. ....

A 955 would produce 33hp at the motor when turning 3200 RPM. By the way would your brother like to sell the backhoe. I would like one. Not a bad price for what came with it. I paid $8500 for mine and it had 951 hours with loader and mower. But that was do to the fact a friend of mine owns a JD dealership and wanted off the lot. ....

I hopped into the JD site to find one of their power curve charts for 955's but couldn't find one. I did notice that 990's are billed as 40hp tractors.

33hp at 3200 rpm sounds about right but it is likely the max hp rather than hp at rated speed. Newer engine designs tend to produce hp ratings that increase above the max torque rpm. Max torque tends to be around pto rpm, which is where most people operate the tractor anyway. Most times when you need extra power it's because the engine is stating to lug and then you'd have to reduce draft to get the engine to speed up in order to take advantage of the greater hp. Nice to have the option though. There's more in the archives on the subject than most people would ever want to read.

I wouldn't get too caught up in hp specs. Some specs have a lot to do with advertising aren't great for comparing the capabilities of different tractors. ....
