I am replacing my JD 455. I am deciding between the new 2210 and the 790. They are about the same price and the 790 seems to have a big edge over the 2210. Any comments or imput to help me make up my mind?

Craig, there is a big difference between thse two tractors and a lot of it depends on you. Can you work with a gear drive tractor after driving a hydro to mow with? How much are you doing that you need to move up to a 790?

Craig
I have a 2003 790 with 419 FEL and King Kutter Finish mower. I have had to move a bunch of snow, build berms for my shooting range, grade and level 21a stone on my driveway , Mow my five acres and general stuff around the ole homestead. I have had a Hydrauluc hose end leak that was immediately replaced no charge and no other problems. I cant say anything about the 2210 either way cause Ive had no experience with it. I can say the 790 is a no frills get the job done "old fashioned" ie, stop to change gears tractor. Ive heard the hydro is nice for FEL work but I dont mind the extra work on my part to get the job done. Bottom line is if you get the 790 it WILL get it done. I am sure the 2210 is also a fine tractor i just cannot speak to a comparison of the two.

If I had wide open areas to mow, i.e., essentially no stopping and turning around then I most likely would have considered the 790 myself, because it's a tremenous value (speaking of hp and ability), but the amount of trees, shrubs, and stuff around my property demands a great deal of stopping and turning and thus, I figured hydro was the way to go.

I agree with all the input here. I have no experience on the 790 but I can say I hear nothing but good about it. The real difference for me on the 2210 Vs 790 was weight and HP and the 2210 is 4wd with a limited slip plus the Hydro. When I bought mine I really didn't think I Would have that much use for the FEL. I honestly can not imagine owning a tractor with out one now.

Gears are something that you get used to. I grew up on a farm with JD A's, B's, 720's, and other gear driven tractors. When I bought a CUT for maintaining my property It was actually more natural for me to operate the gear versions because of my experience with them growing up, using brakes for steering and so forth. The newer gear transmissions with synchro and shuttle shift are nice to have, but not absolutely necessary.

There is a big difference between a 790 and a 2210. I would recommend some serious test drives.

I personally sort of like the 790 concept, but I do not fit on them very well. Too much aging farmboy, too little operator space. Can't step on the brake without triggering the FEL dump circuit.

Both are nice machines and it would be tough to make a poor choice between theese two. They are both very different machines. The toughest thing might be finding a dealer with a 2210 in stock. What ever you choose definately make sure you get a good test ride. Ideally you will be able to find a dealer with both in stock so you can see them side by side.

don't know a lot about the 2210 but a lot of fellas are getting them and they all seem happy. As far as the 790 goes I can say its a real work horse in the CUT lineup. As Mark stated they do have cramped driver area, so depending on your size the 2210 might be a better fit, you might also think about the land your going to be using it on as the 790 as a lot more groung clearance over the 2210 which is helpful for field work and rough land. As you stated price is real close and the 790 seems more tractor with out some of the bells and whistles. (I love mine)best of luck choosing the one thats right you.
