JD compact help for a new guy

HELP....I'm thinking about upgradeing to a JD compact from a 15HP yanmar. Could anyone tell me the differences between the JD850/870/970? I'm thinking something around these lines would work well. I've used a kubota B9200 22.5hp, and it just doesn't seem to have enough guts.Any estimated pricing would be great too!!

The 850 is an older tractor, the 870 replaced it (I have an 870), the 970 is just a few more horsepower and money. They no longer build the 870 nor 970 they are replaced by the 4000's series, but they have a 790 (about same as 970), I would get the 790 because it is built the same as the 870 and 970 and these tractors are built alot better than the 4000's!!

This may be blasphemy on this board but have you considered just moving up to a small ag tractor if you want some real "guts".You might not be making enough of a step up in hp with an 850/870. I was also looking for a jd 850/870 or 950/970 but just decided to try some small ag tractors (45-55hp Ford, JD and MF). Besides being harder to find, the compacts are higher in price ($ per hp) than the ag tractors and it is amazing what another 1500lbs does for a tractor. Just a thought.

If you don't own a JD4000 Series tractor to compare with your JD870 then don't make statements about the 70 series tractors being a lot better than a 4000 series, Ive owned both and I can assure you that a 70 series is a great tractor but it is not "A lot better than a 4000 series".

You'r right! Blasphemy! But I agree with you. The compacts are just lots of fun,but they are not even in the same arena with small ag tractors for power, traction, features, comfort....and just about anything else you want to name....except resale. The JD compact is the king of resale - although the JD ag tractors areno slouch there either. I think everyone knows this difference in the Ag and compact tractors, butthere is one thing on the compact side that makes the difference...FUN! For someindefineable reason the compacts are just pure fun. It sort of reminds me of my old MG sports car. Yes, most family detroit ironcould outperform it, and a muscle car could beat the MG at its own game. Butthat little sports car was FUN! Roger L
