 ballast weights

Are there other weights to purchase different from the ballast box? I've seen large disc types that hook to the 3 point hitch where they could be added and subtracted according to the weight at the front of the tractor. Thanks, web.

 ballast weights

The conventional weights which are used on most Ag. type tractors for counter-balance are relatively very expensive by the pound.

Probably the cheapest adjustable counter-balance I have seen was just a drawbar, the type that is a heavy flat bar that goes between the two lift arms of the 3pth. It has a series of holes for attachment or towing. Cat. 1 hitch pins of the type found on any implement were then installed in four of the holes, two facing each direction. Weight was added or removed by installing plates from a set of body-building weights (although any steel plate could be used) over the pins and retained by a large plate washer and a hitch pin. Total cost not including weights probably about $50, and about 10 minutes to assemble.

I also saw an interesting one, in fact I have been playing with making a version for my new 'Bota. It was a large, very thick, rectangular plate of steel, the short side of which was mounted to a draw-bar of the type mentioned above. The trick part was that a bracket was attached to the side of the plate facing the tractor and not very far above the lower mounts, to which a hydraulic top link was connected. When the top link was extended the plate started to rotate on the draw-bar the top extending out away from the tractor and transfering it's mass farther back and lowering it, giving it the effect of more counter-balance. It was being used on a small machine where sufficient counter-balance for a full bucket load was too much with an empty bucket, this solved the problem nicely.

Best of luck.
