There are 6 ball bearings on each end of the driveshaft. I usually put them in their grooves in the driveshaft and hold them in place with heavy grease. Then align the balls with the splines on the rear shaft coming out of the transmission. Then align the front half and slide the coupling on. Then you have to compress the spring towards the front and install a cotter pin in hole of driveshaft to secure it. Then bolt the shields into place. I hope this makes sense to you.

JD's description sounds pretty good. The whole thing reminds me of assembling simple bearings in races. I used to use what I called 'bearing grease.' The stuff sold for 'bearings' now in box stores isn't near as sticky as what I remember.

Even with the sticky stuff, I've dropped plenty of globs of grease and balls on the floor. The good thing about grease is that the balls don't bounce and roll under workbenches when they drop. I'd count on some dropping and it's be good to work in a large clear area or have some extra bearings.
