I am 100% new to the world of tractors and need one to cut and maintain 10 acres in SW Penna. Nice rolling terrain. I have looked and looked and get more confused about all the issues. 4WD, 2WD. Big, small. Green, orange. I am closing in on a 790 4WD with LX5 cutter. Should this combo be sufficient for a new tractor owner who does not have a large budget...? Any ideas are welcome to a new guy...MJ

Try driving one first, if you haven't yet. I prefer a gear transmission, but I'm in the minority here.
The 790 is a very barebones tractor, no gimmicks. If you just want something to get the job done, it's a heck of a value. I got a quote of $15044 including FEL in southern York County. Currently running a 1991 Deere 670 (almost identical to the 790 except for engine capacity and tire sizes). I love this litle tractor..but my next will most likely be a 790.

I purchased a new 790 (4WD) a few months ago for similar reasons. I also like the gear transmission, though most guys prefer the hydro (which is nice, but extra, extra pricey). However, I chose a non-Deere brand mower because I wanted one with rear discharge so I approach things from either side.

From everything I know, the 790 is a fantastic, nearly bulletproof, no B.S. tractor. However, if you want lots of extra bells and whistles, then you will have to spend quite a bit more for an equivalent 4010 series tractor.

The J.D 790 is a no frills tractor but it has all the equipment you need to get a job done.. I've had mine since the fall of 2001 an it's done everything I've asked it to...

It'll push a 6 ft FEL mounted snow blade, 5 ft bush-hog, 6 ft finish mower, a powers a Woods 5000 chipper.

As for the series 70 loader, it will pick up anything you load the bucket with except maybe lead but I did run out of lift using pallet forks to move large trees. It was a 40 ft green poplar tree, it raised the tree a couple of feet off the ground an stopped...

If you need a tractor in this HP class an can live with gear drive look no further as there is nothing you'll find with more bang for the buck.

If you desire a HST drive check out the New Holland TC 30. It's a similar size no frills tractor but it's offered with HST...

My daddy had a saying "keep it simple stupid, there's less to to go wrong".

Good Luck, let us know what you decide...

Tell me about the FEL mounted snow blade... did you make it or is it available commercially?

The snow blade is by Curtiss, you tell them what tractor you have when you buy it an they will send you some adapter plates.

It pins to the loader the same way the bucket does. If you have J.D. quick hitch, there are adapter for that too.

Hope to add a after market quick hitch to make it easier to switch between pallet forks, bucket an snow blade...
