 used 4100 or new 2210

My local JD dealer has a used 2001 model 4100 with the hyrastatic transmission and 75 hours on it. Any advice on whether to choose the 4100 or go with a new 2210 with a 54" belly mower beyond just the price difference? The 4100 has been kept in a shop and looks new. The previous owner traded for a larger tractor. The 4100 includes a 60" Sovema finish mower (I have never heard of Sovema). My primary use will be mowing 9 acres and light dirt moving with a rear blade.

Go for the 4100. 75 hours is hardly broken in. For 9 acres, you will have some heavy chores from time to time. The 4100 is more heavy duty and just more versatile than the 2210. If the 4100 was in poor shape, then my advice would change.

If your primary use is mowing, especially finish mowing, the 2210 maybe better. The steering geometry on my 4100 would tear the turf no matter what type or tires are used.

I've never had any problems with turf tearing with my 4100 and R4 tires. But I have clay soil not sand, and don't mow when the grass is wet.

Thanks, for the info. One my concerns on the 4100 is the Sovema mowing deck. Does anyone know anything about this brand of equipment?

The 4100 would be my choice. The mower is completely unknown to me and if I were really interested in the machine then ask to deal on the machine alone and purchase a good quality 6' foot rear mower.

4100.
By the way, Sovema is an Italian company. While I recognize the name, I do not know about their products from first hand experience. But, they probably build mowers for companies who have names that you recognize. There are many US companies that source three-point attachments from Italy. These are usually quality products.
Sovema has been marketing products here in the USA for years under their own name. I wouldn't be worried about using the mower. When it wears out, buy one that you really like.

Neuman,
Sounds like the 4100 will serve your needs well. I've never heard of sovema either. I just checked out the sovema web site. It looks like a good piece of equipment. If the mower works and your satisfied with the results, then keep it. In looking at the cost of new sovema mowers, I wouldn't be too quick to get rid of the mower.

good luck Ron

You better try that 4100 with a 60" rear finish mower, I think I would go with a little bigger tractor. I had slightly rolling land and I did not like mowing with my 20 or 24 h.p. tractors with 60" rear finish mower, but it was great with my 955(33h.p.).Then I did the smartest thing of all I quit trying to mow with a compact and started mowing with a commercial riding mower. I can mow circles around a tractor doing the whole job in 1/3 of the amount of time. Most areas have tons of used com. mowers for sale not that expensive either. I have a friend that spent a little less on a tractor/loader and spent the difference on a com. mower and has the best of both worlds. If you do go the rear finish mower route make sure you try it out first.

Thanks for all your input & info. I bought the 4100 last Saturday. The tractor & mower both perform great! I'm trying a 5' rear blade behind it today to move some loose dirt around. The Sovema 60" finish mower seems to be sturdy built & cuts very smoothly.
