My John Deere 850 has dry drum brakes which have not been working well.
I take off the drums and the shoes look good but the drums and shoes are oil soaked.
The pinion seal in the final drives that the drum runs off of is leaking.
But it looks like the seal is pressed in from the inside of the housing with a snap ring inside.
So what should be a fast easy seal change now requires pulling the entire final drive system, the drive gear and pinion to get at the seal.
No question here I just needed to vent.!!

Hope it helped. You probably are a pretty calm person because I'd likely have considerably more to vent.
I don't know what kind of hydraulic oil is used but I have a vague recollection that synthetics are more prone to leaking. Don't know if something like that may be a solution or at least a stopgap measure.

I ran into the same problems with my 750, which is designed the same. I had trouble keeping the brakes on the tractor. The other problem I had was the rusting of the cam lobe on the brake accuatior arm.
I was also worried about the problem you mentioned. Not a good design. I ended up getting rid of my 750 for that reason.
I have advised a number of people away from the 790 which is the same design, but most are unconcerned. ....

It's just that I see no reason the seal could not be on the outer side of the case with a snap ring.
But I guess that would be to easy.
Oh well the parts are ordered. ....

Here is what is involved to get to seal.
Remove ROPS (if installed)
Remove wheel and tire.
Remove fender.Remove brake drum and shoes.
Unbolt hydraulic high pressure line under seat.
Drain hydraulic oil.
Remove entire Final drive assembly.
Remove final drive gear and pinion gear.
Oh baby I finally got to the seal !!!

I got curious about the procedure needed for my 1710. I look at an exploded diagram in my parts manual and think 'Aha that's like I remember, the seal is under a bearing retainer that is removable from the outside.' Then, I look at the repair manual and see the cruncher note that says 'axle must be pressed out the housing to service the oil seal.'
Well, for one reason or another it's basically the same procedure as you're doing and not a very pleasant one. I haven't had to remove an axle housing but seems like an over-head hoist would be handy and maybe almost neceaasry. Guess you have equipment like that.

Yes I do have an overhead crane.
I sure would not want to have to lift this assembly up by hand and try lining up the dowl pins and pinion shaft. ....
