 Sevice Manual

I was gonna say something "SMART" but will pass. Intertec Publishing prints them for Tractor Supply they are called I&T. My bottom line recomendation is to buy the JD manuals. You can buy them at JD or on line. Seems like I&T only does the older out of print manuals, do not know for sure. GOOD LUCK Harvey

 Sevice Manual

I purchased a 1998 870 about 5 months ago. It had an operator's manual which in turn listed various service manuals available with prices. Upon ordering the manuals I thought I would need, I was contacted by the JD publications people to inform me of significant price increases. (The engine technical manual was listed at $16.80 but is now priced at $67.31) I needed to be able to do routine maintenance such as valve adjustments so I sent in a check for $67 --- upon receiving the manual I was surprised to find the manual was huge and covered about 20 models and engines, with only a few pages on the engine in my 870. It would be useful for a dealer that worked on everything but almost a total waste for an indidual that owns one tractor. It actually had a lot of engine design info that even a dealer doing a complete overhaul would not need. JD agreed to let me return the engine manual and suggested I order the Chassis Manual (for $105.00). I sort of felt like i was in quicksand here but I sent the engine manual back and sent funds to cover the extra amount needed to get the Chassis manual. It is better than the engine manual but still is huge because it covers many series of tractors and has only a small section on my 870. This manual does not have the valve adjustment
procedure (as an example) for the 870 however it has the valve adjustment for the 970/990 series?? While I love my tractor I think JD is dropping the ball on technical manuals for the individual owner by optimizing the packaging of their manuals towards the dealer audience. It is sad that they cannot put the simple procedures needed for routine maintenance in the operation manual (like many products/companies do). The phone number to discuss and order manuals from JD is 800-522-7448. They are helpful, the manuals are weak. I would be interested in finding out what third party repair manuals exist for JD tractors -- they might be suited more for the owner than the dealer.
Hope this helps.

 Sevice Manual

I have the same phone number in my JD FOS manuals plus a web site address of http://www.deere.com/aboutus/pub/jdpub/

I don't know if the current manuals are more consolidated than older ones and does sound like the repair manual is bundled with engineering and technical material that often are separate manual series. I can see how consolidated titles and re-bundling of technical content into a repair series might reduce costs for dealers who have to buy manuals, special tools etc. as part of gaining a dealership. That type of product doesn't seem to do much for owners though. The NH Holland shop and parts manuals for my Ford 1710 are less consolidated but the repair manual does cover three tractors and the parts manual seven.

I'm guessing that the in-house publishers are now driven by the in my mind short sighted goals of what I'll call bean-counter management. If more people like you made some noise to the publisher then maybe somebody might think there's some money to be made in serving the needs of the owners and they might revise their manuals.

After market publishers such as I&T play more to the individual owner but I think at the expense of detail and maybe technical specs. I also don't know if they cover special tools needs, which is a big plus in the factory manuals. I received a catalogue from the publishers of the I&T manuals and noticed that some of the ATV manuals listed indicated that they contained wiring diagrams. The tractor manuals didn't mention wiring diagrams and I recall somebody who had an electrical problem ordering one only to find that there wasn't a wiring diagram.
