 4400 PTO lever

Any help would be appreciated before I call my dealer this week.

1) On my 4400, it says when the PTO lever is moved to the second "ON" position, the engine/PTO should run when you get off the seat if you don't have the mid mount mower. (which I don't) My engine shuts off as soon as I get off in either of the "ON" PTO postions. Must be a simple wire someplace?

2) A few weeks ago I went to spread some fertilizer from a hopper type spreader. It sheared off a shear pin in the spreader, I assume because the PTO engaged so hard. Is there a way to avoid that? My old tractor the PTO was actually a clutch lever and you could nurse it to the on position.

Thanks for any help.

Wayne

On my JD 4610, you have to start the PTO after you're off the seat And the park brake set.

On the shear pin, the only thing I know of is engage the PTO at the slowest engine speed possible. You may have had a weak shear pin also.

Eric:
Thanks. I didn't try that earlier. I just ran out and tried that and it worked. So then what is the second position for???

I'm not Eric but I'll try to answer that anyway. My PTO works a little different than yours. I only have one knob, pull it up and the rear PTO engages. If I had a mid PTO, I would have two knobs but would have to pull the rear PTO knob then the mid PTO knob in order to use the mid PTO.

I would think, since you have a 2 position PTO lever, the first position will be the rear PTO and the second would be a mid PTO (if you had one).

I would suspect that the 2nd position is for the mid mount PTO. The PTO's have 2 different speeds. Does the rear PTO have 2 speeds? My large tractor has the 2 speed.
I looked at this but couldn't help. My 955 requires you to tilt the seat and turn a switch to activate the rear off the seat.

The 4400 has a 3 position PTO lever. All the way back is "ON". All the way forward is "off" and engages a brake. The middle position is "off" with no braking action.

I have a 2002 4400 that has a three position PTO. All the way forward is fully engaged, and the middle position is like freewheeling (for repositioning I guess). All the way to the rear is off.
