Going out on a limb jd 950

I recently (yesterday) was contacted by an equipment dealer in Grants Pass Oregon who had taken a 1983 JD 950 4x4 in on consignment. We currently live 300 miles away and I have been looking for something I can use on the property there...5ac mostly wooded, gentle slopes. Future retirement area. Currently taking things in stages to fix up the place. Wanted a tractor to clear brush, remove some stumps and help out with the general work requirred in maintaining such a place.
The equipment dealer said the tractor is equipped with a loader, Blackhawk backhoe w/seperate pump off pto shaft, a rotatiller, ganon box w/hydraulics to angle, and 4' brush hog. They wanted $10,800 for the unit. Backhoe has 13" and 18" buckets. According to dealer, equpment looks to be in good condition and had been maintained.
Now the question...It seems like a good deal but not knowing anything about this tractor and any problems I started searching the internet to determine parts availability, overall opinions, any recalls...etc. This has brought me to your web site. Could the viewers and owner please help me with some information on this tractor regarding open honest opinions about their experiences and parts availability. Thank you and await your response!

The good thing about green is that the parts are alway available, although not necessarily instock locally, but you never have to wait more than 7 days. The bad thing about it is the green that must be shell out for the parts.
I have not heard anything bad about the tractor. Essentually the same tractor is sold today as the 970. The tractor has only one flaw when compared to the current new models, the tractor has dry brakes. Most modern one have wet brakes which means they are sealed in the transmission case. This keep the water of the brakes and associated rust and dissipates the heat generated by the brakes. Very important if you are going a lot of FEL or boxblade work where the motion is linear. Other than this it is a solid tractor.

Peter said it right about the JD 950 other than brakes it is pretty much bullet proof. I've never heard of the Blackhawk backhoe, if it is as old as the tractor loose pins and bushings may be a factor. That Gannon box blade however is king of the box blades, they don't get any better. As it sounds, with the heavy duty equipment that this unit has it was probably used commercialy. That may or may not be a factor in its maintenence life. Plus you didn't mention what type of hours are on this tractor. You should probably contact the dealer and try to get the history of it/maybe some pictures. If the maintenence was kept up you have probably found a good unit. But without the history I would be skeptical, especially if its 300 miles from the place of purchase. Is there a John Deere dealer close to you for parts and service?

Thank you for your response. I have been looking for some while now and everything I have found here in the Reno area is way outside my price range.
I contacted the dealer and inquirred about the hours. He said there were 2000hrs on the unit. The rototiller is the only impliment that shows signs of heavy use, teeth worn down but the seller has agreed to replace these.
I contacted the seller and he said he has owned the jd950 for 10years, buying it from a neighbor in california that had moved. According to the seller, he has changed oil and filters regularly and has been quite happy with the unit. He upgraded to a larger tractor upon moving to the Grants Pass area and no longer had a need for the 950. He did say he had an orchard in Calif. The only thing he said he knew about that leaked was a line on the stabalizer leg of the backhoe, other than that everything else worked.
Does the asking price $10,800 seem too high?

Denny, I sell used equipment in Northern California. With all the attachments, especially the hoe, the price is very reasonable. This comment assumes it is in good condition of course. I would suspect you could buy it and use it for years and turn around and sell it for what you have invested. That is one of the great things about tractors. The 950 is a nice size tractor. Best of luck on your decision.
