Is anyone aware of a known problem on JD870 tractors that results in intermittant operation of fuel and temp gauges on the instrument panel? Or do I just have a problem somewhere in my panel? Thanks

my guess is a problem in the panel. But you need to check out possible stray voltage or even a bad ground before you spend any money.

Thanks, I'll do that. I'm not sure if it is worth spending much money on as the total panel is likely the part that would be bad and that would be big $$$'s. The tach and hour meter work fine.

I cleared up some intermittent lighting and gauge problems on my Ford by cleaning the fuse holder contacts and fuse ends. I also would have been checking and cleaning ground contacts at the same time so it's hard to know exactly what fixed the problems.

Had this problem with my 1996 870 since almost new. Sometimes both would work, sometimes one would work, sometimes neither. Took everything apart and cleaned all connections with no results. Bought new gauge cluster and have had no problems since. You get a new tach also so your hours go back to zero. Cluster was about $100. Getting steering wheel off was biggest problem during replacement.

Sorry EDC,
My first reply was short, hurreyed, incomplete, and indescript. I was in a bit of a hurry.

TomG, mentioned the point I omitted with the dirty connection game. Check those connections.

The instements used in yout tractor are kinda touchy, and sometimes downright finicky.

9 times out of 10, it turns out to be a bad gauge panel, but we have on a couple occasions found the cause to be a faulty ground, or stray voltage through the panel due to customer added equipment.

Hope this helps
