Deere 755, Yanmar 3 cyl, smoke out the breather tube

Hi All,

I've got an '86 model 755 with 2400 hrs that starts and runs great but has a little smoke coming out the breather tube. Blow-by I'm sure. What's the chance I could get by with only a new set of rings? Should I leave it alone for fear of finding I potentially need a bore job, ovrsize pistons, new bearings, etc. etc.

Anyone's experience with this tractor / engine would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Ted

FOXFLIER,IF ITS NOT USING OIL OR MISFIRING DONT WORRY ABOUT
THE BLOWBY.I HAD A JD2640 THAT HAD ALOT OF BLOWBY BUT RAN
GREAT AND NEVER USED ANY OIL.ITS COMMON FOR DIESELS TO
CREATE MORE BLOWBY AS THEY GET MORE HOURS ON THEM.I HAVE
SEEN ABOUT EVERYTHING HAPPEN TO A DIESEL ENGINE IN THE PAST
20 YEARS,I WORK ON BIG TRUCKS FOR A LIVING.THE BIG DIESELS
CAT,CUMMINS AND DETROIT RUN ABOUT 30,000 TO 35,000 HOURS
BEFORE NEEDING OVERHAULED BECAUSE OF HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION.

Thanks for the reply. Like I said it starts and runs like a champ. It doesn't appear to be using oil and it doesn't really smoke out the exhaust unless under a really hard load so I guess I'll chill out on pulling the head! This is my first diesel and I'm not too familiar with the kind of hrs you can get with one before starting to replace parts. Having done quite a bit of gas engine work over the years, I'm a little overly sensitive to any smoke!

Regards

Wait till you have a loss of power and smokeing while it works before you overhaul it. Have you adjusted the valves yet?(should be done every 500hrs)

Good question. I haven't had it that long so I don't know. I suppose I could be getting some smoke from bad valve clearance. I should probably go ahead and pull the valve cover and check'em.

Thanks!

Hmmm. Very interesting.

Let's clear some issues up here. Excecive blowby could be caused by worn rings. Or it could be caused by a scored piston. But the latter would at least cause a oloss of power, possibly a miss as well.

Or it may be as simple as one broken ring, but that is still no cheap repair, you must do major disasssembly to repair the problem.

It could even be valve guides or seals.

the first thing I believe we should do is determine what you think is excessive and go from there.

Rings wouldn't be a big deal. I'd probably go ahead and do the rod bearings while I was at it. A scored piston wouldn't even be that big of a deal either. A scored cylinder would be a big deal as well as if I got into it and found out it needed a bunch of other stuff like mains, crank work, valve job, etc, etc. I was mainly interested to find out others experience with the durability of the Yanmar diesel in terms of the # of hrs before they typically require a top-end, just rings, boring, etc. As I said above, it runs good, develops good power, and doesn't smoke -- just some blowing smoke out the breather. I guess I need to just break down and do a compression test and a pressure check to see if I'm loosing air past the rings. At least that would narrow things down. OR, I could just run it 'till it has a real problem like using oil....

Thanks

My recommendation is to change the oil. I certainly found that I could stress the oil on my 750 and have breathing when hot. My 750 had low hours and never burned much oil between changes if the oil was good. I found that the oil would start to burn as the tractor neared the change time.
If you are trying to extend the life further I might start using the synthetic oil.
