Poor Design on the John Deere 430 Loader?

I have a 4400HST with 430 loader. Out of warranty as of last Sept.
Just lost the second set of loader lift cylinder packings. First was replaced under warranty by dealer. Now it's on me.

The packing is some kind of plastic. When disasembled, (I watched), it came out looking like a pretzel.

Dealer was going to modify the piston to accept a set of Vee packings to improve the life. (This is what's in my old "real" cylinders on a JD Loader/backhoe).

Just learned there is not enough "meat" in the aluminum piston, so they can't do it. Back to the factory plastic packing.

Anyone have any ideas or experience with this problem?

I do use the loader hard, that's why I bought it, pulling brush out of the ground with a four way bucket. But haven't bent or broken any other serious parts of the loader, so I don't think I am to the abuse stage of using it.
Any ideas will be appreciated.

I think I would be inclined to replace the cylinders with something more conventional, rather than spending the time to replace the packings. I am sure you can get cylinders to fit the loader that are more robust a will handle the abuse.
Once you have the cylinders replaced you may consider repacking the others for back up, if the cost of the packings is not too large.

Poor Design on the John Deere 430 Loader?

I recently had the same problem and my loader was just out of warranty. I had the packings in the main lift cylinders blow twice (within a week) and the bucket curl cylinders blow once. The bucket cylinders were repacked and have held, but after the second round of problems with the lift cylinders, the dealer replaced the cylinders. I noticed that the design of the cylinders has changed. Also, the dealer said that packings on the 430 loader are a HUGE problem. The dealer didn't charge me for any of this work even though it was out of warranty. So far, everything is holding.

I decided to upgrade to the 430 loader for my 4300 HST because I thought it would hold up better than the 420 loader. So far, I'm not impressed with the reliability of the 430 loader...

Steve

davebc,
If it were me I would be jumping on JD to repack or replace the cylinders at they're cost. Many have had this problem with the 430 loader.

I have posted on this before, but yeah, I have had the same problem with my 430 loader. First round under warranty, the dealer replaced all four cylinders on my loader. Second round out of warranty, I pulled the cylinders off and carried them to a hydraulic shop. The man at the shop told me JD used very low quality parts in their cylinders. He done some mods internally to the cylinder and told me that should take care of all my problems. Hopefully, this will last. I averaged about 200 tractor hours between round one and two. Granted all of those hours I had not been using the loader. Time will tell if the rebuild job will hold. BTW, he rebuilt them for $80 each.
