We are looking to buy a trailer for our tractor. We know from the specs that the tractor weighs 3000 lbs. Does anyone know how much a model 80 bucket assembly weighs? Or does anyone have any recommendations on what load capacity trailer to get?

Thanks for the help
Leslie

Probably a 7000lb trailer would be your best bet. Trailer brakes are a good thing to have the new trailer come with. An 18 foot model with a dove tail rear will make things easier to load and unload. The trailer i have now is a 16foot and my JD950 and bush hog just fit on it and I dont have a loader. I also dont have the dove tail rear and I have to use 2 wood planks on the ramps to lesson the angle so the 3 point doesnt bind up as I load or unload. The tractor by itself goes on and off the trailer with no troubles.

Also if the trailer has special places for hooks and chains that makes it easier to tie one down to keep it on the trailer.

And of course your truck needs to be able to handle things. A receiver hitch is a good thing or an older truck rear bumper is usually heavy enough.

Half ton trucks can do the job. 3/4 and 1 ton trucks do it all better.

Todd

Farmgirl, my JD 4300 with loader and tiller weighs approx. 4400 lbs. I use a 16' tandem axel flatbed with slideout ramps. Trailer is rated for 7000 lbs. When I have the bushhog mower attached, it hangs over by about 3-4 feet. I need a longer trailer. I'm looking at a Byson 20' gooseneck. But I will have to wait awhile. Jim in Idaho

Most full floored car hauler trailers will have two 3500# axles for a 7,000 lb. GVW. You should be able to find those around fairly easily. Now they most all have brakes and breakaway boxes, but double check anyhow. As to length, it's never a bad idea to go a little larger than you need; It saves you trading up when you get a larger tractor. ;o)

Here is my setup. The trailer deck is 18'. It's a 3/4 ton suburban. Pulls it like nothing. I usually pull the tractor up a litle futher now. I use 10,000 lb tie down straps.

I hope the picture link works.

Could I ask the price on the 20' Byson GN? I currently have a eagle 18'dove tail 10K gvw brake on both axles. Like to trade up to a 24' GN and 12 to 14K gvw.

Here's my setup with a 16foot trailer. As you can see its a tight fit!

The biggest problem I see with trailers is that people tend to overload them. A 7000# GVW trailer is exactly what it says, Gross Vehicle Weight. These tandem trailers weigh right around 1800# so you can only put 5200# on the trailer. Personally, I have a 14,000# GVW trailer with brakes on both axles and TORSION axles. When I put my tractor with loader and some rear attachment on this trailer it pulls like a dream. This trailer weighs a hefty 2500# and pulls rough empty. But then again, I rarely pull it empty. Torsion axles make a world of difference and being an engineer I would prefer to err on the side of caution especially since I trailer my tractor alot. I also have a 12,000 weight carrying (not weight distributing) hitch on my truck. Again, better safe than sorry.

Matt
