 Help, John Deere 4400 ! ! !

I have a used JD4400 on hold at my local Massey dealer. He picked it up from a JD dealer. He said the unit is two years old and it just came off lease. The tractor did not have a loader and was used for mowing with a 3pt mower. The Massey dealer added a brand new 430 loader to it and is offering it to me for $13,900. The tractor has Hydro, mid pto, turf tires, brand spanking new 430 loader, 500 hours on clock. Machine looks almost new.

Here's the problem, after reading all the posts in the archives about problems with this machine I am worried about whether I should buy this machine at all. The dealer says it's two years old which makes it a 1999 or 2000 model. It has the parking brake next to the seat and I don't know which MFWD front axle it has. My intended uses are landscaping, snow removal, and mowing at my 3 acre home site.

Armed with the serial number, could a JD dealer tell me if this machine has had any major repairs or recurring problems.

The machine is on hold, but I have a good relationship with this dealer and I can walk away if I need to.

 Help, John Deere 4400 ! ! !

I posted the previous note concerning the 4400's I have had experience with/owned.
I have had a couple of friends inquire about purchasing my 4400 from me, I just honestly could not sell it for what it is worth knowing the problems with it
Perhaps you can take the serial number to a JD dealer and see if there is a warrenty service record.
I wish I could be more positive about these tractors - I just can't and am very ticked that Deere would make anything that had so many problems with it.
I own a JD 5205 that I purchased new in Nov 01 - and its a fine tractor, I use a 48 JD model B about 200 hours a year, I previously owned a 755 and a 770 that were both good reliable tractors, I also have other JD impliments that are fantastic - all of which I would recomend to anyone - but I dont feel confident in recomending the 4400.
I have read in a number of threads where folks are having good luck with and really like their 99-01 4400's.
Perhaps where myself and some of the other un happy folks are more vocal is that we paid well over 20,000 for new tractor, loader, mower, etc., and then to lose it for weeks on end while it is in for repairs. Mine goes off warrenty in June - dont you think I aint sweating that !!!
I think the only thing that would make me smile green at this point is if Deere walked in and said "we will pay you what you paid for the tractor minus $$ for the hours on the meter" - at that point I would go with a Deere Compact Tractor, but not the 4000 series.
I hope this helps some

Was a lease Owned by landscaper, owned by farm service, sold to dealer
No major problems reported Seven major repairs while under warranty

I told the dealer that I will pass on this one. Glad I checked !

Hey, that got all jumbled up !
heres the points...4 yrs old, not 2
680 hrs at last service, now reads 540 hrs on dash. HMMM
Had 7 major repairs under warranty
Had two previous owners who probably used it heavily. (landscaper, then Farm service)

Ok, I'll just have to look for something else.

StephMartu@aol.com. I couldn't agree more. The JD4400 with Hydro Trans is a real problem child.

 Help, John Deere 4400 ! ! !

Hey, i was convinced to buy a JD 4400 , it was the best value ( even though i was paying $2000 more, it had a better resale value i told myself ) they were more reliable ( even though i saw all the problems JD had ) i was much nice ( till i test drove a NH TC40D ) and guess what....
I now own BLUE...
I jump over here to read about the JD 4400 problems i avoided, and yes NH has its share also, but i saved $2000.
Not regretting buying JD, not ONE DIME!!!!
