 JD855 rental, Price any good?

Looking at a 1994 JD 855 from a rental place. they said no major work has been done to it. meter is 400 hours however, meter was replaced so it actually has about 600 hours. 4x4 with loader. turf tires, look a little rough. few knobs missing on stuff. paint ok, other than that looks ok. records kept. They are look for 7500.00. Any thoughts? what should I offer.

It may not be worth buying. Just think how many different abusive operaters that tractor has had over it lifetime. It's like buying a rental car that has 50,000 miles on it - not a chance.

An average of 2 hours / week on a rental - NO WAY. Run away, run away fast! This does not sound like a "deal"!

Well, I guess the risks of buying a rental machine are obvious. However, the tractor is worth something, and the question is how much. Of course, if the tractor is the only local alternative within the budget range then it's still a possible deal. There are ways to rationalize the value of rental equipment. I owned a sideline sound & lighting company for 10 years. I sometimes bought rental equipment to keep my costs manageable. The dealer wrote a standard 1.5% per month off the list price of rental equipment and also offered 'rent to purchase' deals. A 90-day warranty was offered on any rental equipment purchased. Usually I rented for a few months to get a feel for the equipment. The dealer tried to make purchasing from the rental stock attractive enough so the equipment rotated fast enough so few pieces had to be taken out of rental service and surplused. The surplused equipment sold at very low prices. Nobody who uses sound equipment professionally will buy unreliable equipment at any price.

Lots of alternatives is what makes good deals and I'd seek to widen my alternatives. If few used compacts are in your area; I'd look at used equipment from dealers further away. Virtually all dealers ship almost anywhere. If it's a budget question, I'd look at older farm and utility tractors. There is a premium to be paid for all the bells and whistles of 4wd/HST compacts, and the more traditional tractors can do many jobs quite.

If there’s still interest in the rental tractor, a really good question is whether the tractor is still in service as a rental machine. If the company won't offer it to their rental customers, why would anybody want to own it? If it was all that easy to fix up and keep in service or sell at a profit, then the rental company probably would do the work rather than sell it as is. Another question is whether the rental company is a dealership? A dealer is more likely than a rental company to want to retain good customer relations and would more likely operate similar to my sound equipment dealer (who also manufactured the equipment).
