 4100 HST power

I've been following this web site for about a year and i have bought a john deere 4100 in feburuary 2000, it's the right tractor for me. I own 5.50 arcers with four acers being horse pasture. I wanted the tractor to mow my yard and pasture plus plow snow. I bought the HST with turf tires and chains for all four tires. It seems to me that with the chains on plowing snow in 4-wheel drive in low range and rpms up the tractor does not seem like it would not have the power to spin all four tires pushing snow. I read that HST models only have 40-60% of hsp. the tractor has, I also tried pulling small stumps out of the ground in four wheel drive low range rpms up without the chains in the summer and the tractor did not seem like it has alot of power to the wheels. Is this the normal power i should expect with the HST 4100 tractor?

Yes it is Dave. I traded a 4100 due to that very reason. I was mislead a bit by the dealer (read salesman) when I purchased the unit, should have known better. It does a great job mowing though and the loader works well for piling snow even without chains with those turfs.

This is interesting....I have a 4100 HST and am surprised by the amount of power
it has. I back-up steep hills in 4WD in low with the 60" rear-mount mower running and the tractor does not even hestitate. As a matter of fact, I seldom
need to use 4WD. Most of the time I just lock the differential and that is enough to get me through most situations. I also use turf-tires.

I never had a hitch while mowing either. Plenty of power for that, backwards or frontwards.

I also have a 4100 and have all the power I expected. I have pulled stumps, moved snow (loader, and rear blade), move a lot of dirt and using the rear blade dug large holes about two feet deep (500-600 square feet) in the ground for flower gardens. I have not had a problem with the power of the tractor. When I have had a problem it is more associated with the weight of tractor. That is, spinning tires, or lifting the tractor's wheels off the ground (pulling stumps with the loader).
I agree with others, this tractor simply takes longer to do various jobs,
