 Transmission / gear fluid

I need help bad, and fast! I called two J.D. dealerships and they wouldn't give me the time of day. I brought my 4100 (manual gear) home to find the dipstick at the base of my seat and the dipstick on the front axel dry! Reading the operators manual made things worse. The manual mentions (no picture) gear case oil and how important it is to use the correct blend (GL-5 gear lubricant)and states "do not use Hygard in the gear case! A few pages later it shows my tractor with a dipstick at the operators feet but in a different location than mine is. It calls this dipstick the gear transmission dipstick and calls out Hygard. Now I have a machine I will not use (until the fluids are correct) and a manual that I have no confidence in. I need help and quick! Thanks in advance! Kevin

The Hygard goes into the dipstick between your legs.

The GL-5 goes into the front axle dipstick.

I went and checked my 4100 manual (I was pretty sure but wanted to be certain before I told you)

When they say gearbox they mean the front axle and transmission/hydraulic is between your legs. Looking in my manual, all the dipsticks they show look like what I actually have on the tractor. Does your cover say "with gear transmission" on the cover? My manual has a OMM134595 J7 number on it. Did you get the wrong manual?

 Transmission / gear fluid

Craig - thanks for the reply. Very timely as I am heading out to the machine now. I have the same book and it says, with gear transmission. On page 76, there is a piicture of the transmission dip stick but it shows it to the right (if sitting on the machine) of the rubber grommet. Mine is actually sticking out of the left most hole, strange...
Thanks for straightening me out on the fluids and terminology. Now I need to sort out why these levels are so low...
Kevin
