 Question on FEL on JD790

I joined the rank and file this past weekend and bought a 1999 JD 790 w/FEL, cutter and box blade. Same old story, city boy marriescountry girl, now lives on 10 acres with2 horses. Last night when doing a littleplaying I mean mowing, I noticed that the FEL arms at the base where it is attached to the tractor by your feet, had about a 1/4" play in it when I went over bumps. Should I try and tighten the bolts there or should there be some movement. Thanks in advance for any help.Larry

 Question on FEL on JD790

Larry, I don't remember how the model 70 loader on your 790 mounts to the tractor, but I believe it uses the same quik-tach method employed on the 420-430-460 loaders. If this is the case and you are describing the 4 bolts that connect the rear loader mount to the tractor, then you should definitely torque these bolts down to their specification as soon as possible. Call your local JD dealer's service department to find the torque spec. My dealer warned me to keep an eye on those bolts when the tractor was new and make sure they are kept tight.

 Question on FEL on JD790

Larry, if it's the horizontal brackets that bolt to the tractor frame, there should be no play at all. If it's the vertical loader masts there may be a little movement. There are shims that should be adjusted to minimize this movement. I just did it on mine and it's pretty simple. Lower the bucket and raise the front tires a bit. Disengage the loader quick release handles on each side. raise the bucket slowly until there is about 1" of clearance to the mount at the front (loader frame will drop about 1"Wink yeah right. Then loosen the shim bolts (two on each side) and tap the shims down until they are snug. Retighten the bolts and reattach the loader. It's all covered in the loader operators manual if you got one. Hope this helps. Rob
