Have a 870JD and am planning on a six foot king cutter grading box. Tractor is 28hp. Will the tractor have any problem pulling a six foot box or should I go with a five foot box? Appretiate comments.

Bo, I have a 870 also. I have a 3-point ripper-shank unit with (I think) 6 prongs. Each prong is about 10 inches. When fully buried in clay-like soil the tractor looses no power at all, but traction then becomes a problem. If you took your time which you normally do when grading a 6' box might do it. It would be nice to go out equal to your tire width anyway. Does the box have rippers??

Thanks for the response , Mike the tractor has 4wd and loaded turfs. The soil is clay where I have to regrade and the box does have rippers. I guess that I am more concerned about a 6 ft. box loaded with stone or loose dirt more than ripping virgin soil. The problem with wheel width is that the turfs are 63" wide anda 5 ft. box won't come near trees fences etc . A 6ft gets close and the tractor stays away. I just bought this unit and wondering what your experience is with any problems, likes and dislikes, etc. Bo

Bo, I bought the tractor with 470 hrs. last year. It now has 520 hrs. I've had zero problems so far and the guy I bought it from had neither. You got a very good tractor. I spent 2 yrs. researching everything on tractors and the 870 is one heavy-duty unit. If you compare it to a same hp. Kubota the L2500 (27hp.)--which I almost bought, the 870 has it beat in every dept. it has all the stuff bigger tractors have like live pto, wet disc brakes, planetary final drives, duel element air filter. I know you could pull that 6' box and only traction would be your limit.

Mike, your message was reassuring. I also did a lot of research and like everything about it. Thanks for the info.

Bo, I forgot to note: Yesterday I was looking my tractor over--underneath and all around and what amazes me after 500 hrs. all the seals don,t have the even the slightest leak anywhere. Just like it came off the showroom floor.
