A highly informative, highly opinionated dealer I'm talking to says a HST falls way short of manual transmission when it comes to doing real tractor work. I'm not sure in concrete, specific terms what he's talking about: pto HP loss? torque? additional issues? He sells mostly to farmers whereas my local dealershiop has a large proportion of yuppie customers. I'm torn, because whereas manual may be more robust, HST seems a lot safer for a novice, especially if I'm operating a front loader at the same time. Then there's the Kubota Glideshift transmission, which seems like it combines the best features of both: you get to shift without clutching, but it's still hardy 'cause it's not HST. I'd be grateful for the benefit of knowledgeable opinions.

I'd be a little leary of any dealer (particularly a "highly informed one" who is probably a legend in his/her own mind...)who makes blanket statements such as you describe. What are YOUR specific requirements? They won't necessarily be the same as MINE or someone else's. Think about it, if we all had the same buying criteria, there'd probably only be one make/model of tractors on the market! A good dealer will find out what a given customer plans to use the tractor for and then (and only then...) make recommendations accordingly (e.g. tractor model, HP, transmission, 2WD/4WD, implements, etc.). Good dealers will also take your budget into account when making recommendations. Good Luck Smile)

I'd want to find out exactly why the dealer has such an opinion. It may beas simple as lots of farmers being concerned about fuel economy. Manuals aremore economical and more durable in a machine which spends its life pullingat full power. Possibly you don't care about that. I know that I don't. It many also just be lack of knowledge on his part since farm tractors have alwaysbeen manual tranny. Although my car is an automatic, my tractors are stick shift. The reason isthat the manual clutch is far more accurate for moving tiny amounts against a heavy resistance....Like shoving a big rock a few inches to get it into theperfect position in a landscape. Or anytime you only want to move an inch. I do not know the "glideshift". THe JD hydrostatic is not interesting to mefor the reasons I have just mentioned. The JD power reverser is a different animal entirely and I will not buy another loader tractor without it. I find that for me the various hydrostatic transmissions are not good at this.

My car and truck are both manual transmissions and they will always be so. My tractor is a hydro. I made the choice because of loader use. It is a great transmission. Control is precise. I feel control is much better than a manual. Real easy to manuver that rock into the perfect spot. When you go back and forth a lot with a loader you really appreciate the hydro.
