Backhoes can be very hard on tractor frames, and unskilled use can do a lot of damage to a tractor. The basic choice is between 3ph models, which are convenient but subject a tractor to the most stress and sub-frame models. Sub-frame types are more expensive and less convenient to use, but subject a tractor to less stress. There are quite a few lengthy discussions on mount types and hoe use in the archives. Hoe also can be dangerous. I'd pay particular attention to safety related discussions. Reading through the archives might answer most questions, and any remaining questions can be posted here.

Jim, I looked for almost a year at hoes (JD, Bush Hog, & Woods) for my 855. Settled on a Woods 7500 with subframe ($5,200) which I took delivery on last Saturday. IMHO the Woods is better priced, stronger built, better hose routing, and has one heck of a bucket. It's still sitting on my trailer so I'll let you know how it works when I get it mounted. DO NOT go with the 3ph mount, as many people also warned me against doing. One reason is that the main rear axle housing on the x55 series is aluminum. Another is that after splitting my tractor in two last summer to replace the front axle housing that was broken open by a rock picked up by the mower, I can assure you that you don't want to have to fix that type of damage which a hoe could cause. As for hydraulics, I'm using the auxilaries off the tractor, the hoe needs ~6 GPM and the 855 puts out 5.6 GPM, the 955 puts out over 7 GPM so you should have enough flow. Even if you want the PTO pump setup, I'm told it can be installed at any time in the future with no modifications. Hope this helps
