 JD 790 Lateral Float

I've had my 790 for about 6 weeks now......can't say enough good things about the machine....a few questions have come up though, ....perhaps someone more familar with the 790 can answer.......with regards to the rear 3 pt hitch arms......from reading the operators manuaI.I see that the arms can be set to lateral float by moving 2 pins, out of their slots.?? OK no problem with that.....but what would be some examples of where I would want that.?????rototilling.....using rear blade or box scraper....anyone.?????thanks in advance.Glen

 JD 790 Lateral Float

I have a 4300 but it's the same. So far the only time I use the float is when useing the rear blade for snow removal. When the blade is angled the front corner hits the ground first, in float it will level it's self with the ground (I'm normally on asplaht or concrete) and useing a rear finish mower and rotary mower so they fallow ground conture better.

Lateral float would likely be used most often with ground engaging equipment, such as a moldboard plow, or cultivator (when weeding rowed crops). These tools are adjusted to go in the ground, to trail behind, and to not respond to sideways movement, such as when you correct the direction of travel (turning the steering wheel). If the 3 pt attachment is rigid (pins in place) then it will move sideways whenever the tractor turns (and restricts steering if held rigid). If allowed to float, then the attachment will trail (as long as any sidehills are not affecting it, and as long as the arms don't contact the rear wheels (often the case with compacts)) behind. This is similar to the old days when we would let the drawbar swing behind, such as pulling a disc or harrow (yes I know, REALLY in the dark ages!). You will feel it in the performance of the tractor whenever you need to let the arms float laterally. Hope this helps.
