 problems w/JD 4300 HST Tractors

I just bought a JD 4300 w/HST and 430 loader. I have been reading the postings on this sight and am finding out that there are more problems than I was aware of. Can anyone tell me what the front axle and HST pedal (being difficult to depress) problems are? Is there a fix? Is there a number I can look for?

Loweb, don't panic. The JD4300 and its close relatives had a number of problems which have been covered in great depth here on the . Most of these problems have been corrected over the past two years with engineering and production changes by Deere. First of all, did you buy a new 4300 or a used one? If your tractor is new production then it should already have all the fixes. The front axle scuffing problem varied in degree from tractor to tractor, but the design was changed a year ago to eliminate the issue. If your 4300 was produced after February, 2000, then you should already have the new axle. There is a post in the archives here on CTB from about a year ago that describes how to tell the difference between the 2 axles in detail. It is worth your time to go through the archives if you have an older 4300. The hydro pedal issue is that they were hard to press in certain tractors. My 4400 is a year old and was never a problem, but my dealer mentioned the other day that there is a "fix" out from Deere if I wanted it - sounded like different pedals and maybe springs. I bought my 4400 fully aware of the reported problems, but for me it was a tradeoff for the features and superior (IMHO) loader/backhoe that I wanted. I've been very happy with my purchase and would do it again, because this tractor met my specific needs best. Your mileage may vary.

Loweb,
I have been researching John Deere compact tractors for about a year now and was skeptical about these tractors at first, especially with all the design problems. After finally nailing down a dealer it looks like a 4300 mfwd, hst, folding rops,w/430 loader is a reality.Just 2 months before I order!!!
Cant wait!!!Any way the dealer told me he would order a fresh tractor straight from the factory because there have been over 300 design changes since inception. While talking to all of the dealers they told me that Deere was not going to forget owners with past problems, regardless of warranty, so if you have problems don't forget to get some "real" answers.

Ya, I bought my tractor before I knew any of the design problems, and I'm not realy sure when my tractor was manufactured. The dealer said you could tell what model year it was by the serial number, but I need to know what part of the serial number I'm looking for. Anymay, I really enjoy my tractor and feel it was a good purchase, I was just getting a bit unsure of my choice of tractor by all the problems people were posting. Thanks for the reponse.

I bought my 4300 before there were problems - at least reported problems. So I am approaching the end of my warrenty. I sure hope that JD will stand behind any new problems I find with it. I have had a fair share, mostly non-critical and all handled quite nicely by the dealer with no questions asked and no charge. It sure would be nice to know what the 300 design changes are. I know from looking at the latest machines that some are visible - like the axle and the changes to the MFWD control, etc. Despite it all I am quite happy with the tractor and would do it all again even knowing what I know now.

On a 4200 thru 4600 tractor.....look at the last four digits of your serial number. If the number is in the 100,000 range it was first year production, 200,000 it was second year production.....etc
