 metal shavings

Mike&Rodger, Thanks for responding. Im not sure the type of shavings they were. They may have been aluminum, not sure. I guess I should have checked. I'm going to call the JD rep back tomorrow so I hope to have more info. I'm sure the rep is just going to tell me all in normal, but you never know. For all of you reading, CTB is new to me, I have gone through the several pages of 4100 info posted. If there are any problems I should know about, please let me know. I have heard there was transmission problems with 4100 but only on the gear drive. The problem I heard was that it was very difficult to shift gears with a lot of load on the tractor by pulling something of if the tractor was on a hillside. Saying that, most that I've read from owners of 4100 gear drives has been good.

Eric, I have a 4100 gear with about 75 hours of variable types of use. I have never had any problems with the transmission. It's a typical collarshift -stop -shift -go.

Eric, it sounds like you are on top of it. Really, there isn't much preventive maintenance that you can do that you are not already doing. Talking to the Deere rep was a good move. Too bad you didn't keep any of the particles, the relative proportions of the various materials is easy enough to measure, and would tell us a lot - particularly if it changes from oil change of oil change. I wouldn't be surprised if the screen has caught and eliminated most of the aluminum tooling process shavings. From here on out what you should see is very finely ground particles of iron growing like a beard on the magnet. This is normal wear. A sign to be concerned is when the magnet begins to pick up identifiable chunks of magnetic material.
One thing you might want to do is to document somehow the conversations with the JD rep. Lots of companies are glad to help you out past the warranty if you can prove to their satisfaction that the claim is legit. Emails, faxes, letters,....something more concretethan a telephone conversation.

Hello everyone; I contacted the JD rep today. Got right through with no problem. As I thought I didn't really find out anything but they did file a case number to the serial number of the tractor and for myself to file. In the event I have problems in the future (in or out of warranty), I may have some recourse to act on. They did tell me that the metal shavings I sent through the Satisfaction First Program would be reviewed and I would be contacted. I feel better knowing JD acts like they care but In response to todays replys
(1-29)I cannot argue with the fact that metal shavings are metal shavings and regardless of normal or not, that doesn't make it right. Should that transmission ever fail, regardless of the reason, I will always think about those metal shavings I found while doing the right thing by changing my fluids before the manufactures recommendations.
