Can anyone help me compare the weight and size of the JD955 with other tractors in its ballpark? Is it on the light side, as compared, say, with the 4300, which, according to the brochure, weighs 2,900 lbs? Is it more in the 4100 neighborhood for weight and size (1,565 lbs. and much more compact than the 4200 & 4300)? How does the 790 compare, size and power-wise, with the 955 & the 4300? Is it too light for loader work? Would you say what the dealer told me about ag tires--that for light loader work on a dry lawn--they won't chew up the lawn? How does $17k sound for a 4300 HSD, 4wd, with a 420 loader? Any wisdom would be appreciated.

Schafer Motor Company (Orange, VA) quoted $17k for the 4300 w/loader. Tel: 540-672-5555. But don't quote me on it. We didn't go into details about, i.e., didn't discuss every feature I was looking for, and didn't discuss what costs were included in the $17k quote. I spoke with Scott Schafer. Probably best not to mention what you heard, 'cause I'd hate to be accused of disseminating false information. Good hunting. ....

Some BALLPARK figures to consider. A 4300 with HSD will typically go for about $16K (list is about $18,770), add another $2,500 (list is about $2,954) or so for the 420 loader and you're looking at about $18,500 for the hydro. The 4300 with a 12/12 Sync. Rev. would be about $1,000 less (list is about $17,685). These prices would be for AG tires, DSCV, MFWD and folding ROPS. Loader should include ballast box, bucket level indicator and grill guard. My guess is you were "quoted" a 4300 with the gear transmission - if not, suggest you jump on the hydro before the dealer changes his mind! ....

I paid 17.9k for 4300, folding rops, 4wd 12/12 sync with AG's and 430 loader,no mid pto. Didn't really haggle 'cause the dealer is a neighbor and I thoughtI better stay on his good side. Sure enough, this 4300 got the recall for transmission, and we are trying to schedule the work. In creeper gear when it's hot, it wants toback up even with the sync in neutral. Not good. I have confidence that dealerand Deere will make it right. Dealer had a small fire in his shop and is a littleoverwhelmed right now. I have not seen any of the problems regarding lack ofpower in high range, but I don't have the hst. Overall, pretty happy with it.Hello to everyone on these boards whose posts I enjoy daily. ....
