 JD 48 Backhoe

I am currently shopping for a JD 48 backhoe for my JD 4300 and have several questions for those who may have this backhoe on a 4300 or 4400. In your estimation, does the 4300 or 4400 have enough power to operate the backhoe effectively or do they lack the necessary hydraulic power or horsepower? I used to have a frame mounted Bradco on a Kubota GST 2900 and the digging power was adequate, however, the swing power was limited with a full 24" bucket. Also, with the 24" bucket full of creek muck and the mast fully extended in front of you, there was not enough power to lift the load straight up to dump and you always had to curl it back to the tractor and then swing to dump. This was always very frustrating and slowed you down alot. Also, how is the stability of this narrow tractor when the backhoe is attached?

I don't know how much help this reply will be since I don't have a 48 backhoe. I do have a JD4300 HST with 430 FEL. Based on my experience with the 4300 I think it has enough hydralic power to handle a backhoe. The 430 FEL can lift 1000 lbs. and the 3pt hookup can lift 2000 lbs. I think rear ballast would be a requirement with a 48 backhoe. Suggest talking to your JD dealer.

Chuck

Les, I have a #48 hoe on my 4700 and the hoe can toss the 4700 around like a toy. You may want to consider the #47 with your size machine. David

I have a 48 backhoe on a 4400. I have mainly used it to did out tree stumps. As David said it will toss the tractor around. So there is plenty of power. I have never tried to load a truck or trailer with it so I can not speak to that. My biggest bucket is 18". I have been able to dig out every stump I have atempted to and been able to lift them out of the hole. I never had any problem swinging with the bucket full. I do know that if you have alot of weight in the bucket and the boom and dipperstick fully extended it makes the front of the tractor very light. This is with the stablizers down. This is the only time I have felt it was anywhere close to being unstable. I am very happy with my setup. Chris

Les, I have the same setup as Chris R. and the 4400 has more than enough juice for the 48 backhoe. It continues to amaze me what this setup can accomplish. I haven't experienced the front end getting light with the boom and dipperstick extended, but I see where it could happen with a full load in the 18" bucket. I would just load some rocks or other material into the loader if I anticipated this kind of work. Have not experienced any lateral instability due to width of tractor - I'm running turfs. The 48 backhoe is well suited to the 18" bucket, even in the glacial stones and clay that I am blessed with. I would anticipate no problem with a 24" bucket if the soil wasn't too rocky, but you would probably want to load the FEL bucket with weight for more stability.
