 4100 started knocking something terrible

I have a 4100 with 80 hours on it that started knocking something horrible while mowing with it. I have it in the shop since it is still under warranty, but the shop is backed up a little and I am curious. I did my 50 hour oil change and have checked it a few times since with it being full every time. The knocking was from the engine and started all of a sudden after about 15 mins of running at high rpm's. I shut it down as quick as I could, checked the oil, which was full, and also the radiator, which was full. The knocking sounded like the thing had no oil in it. Does anyone have an idea? I am getting ansy waiting for the dealer to fix it and am looking for some information in the mean time to tide me over.

Had that happen on my 750 once, scared the bejesus out of me. Turned out to be a plugged fuel filter. This was a diesel-sounding knock, only REALLY LOUD, sorta like they sound when they first start.

I had this happen with my John Deere Model 670. It only had about 5 hours on it and I was warming it up before using it. The engine started knocking loudly but stopped after a few seconds. In fact, it quit before I could reach the tractor on a dead run and shut it off. Sure does make the adrenaline flow!

I got my tractor back on Saturday. After sitting at the dealer for a week (service department is way behind), it was not making any abnormal noises. The only thing the mechanic could tell me is that it may have got an air bubble in an injector. He told me that usually sounds like a blown rod, but goes away. So the only damage is a week without my tractor which is better than a blown up one!

This happens fairly regularly (maybe once a month) to one of our machines. I guess with more machines racking up many hours the odds are just higher. The pump/injector speciality shop we use diagnosed the problem over the phone the first time it happened (also with my heart in my throat). It is usually caused by algae in the filter/water seperator bowl assembly, hard as it may be to believe algae grows very well in diesel fuel. Use of a standard fuel additive which contains anti-algae compounds will usually prevent this situation which occurs most often in equipment such as a tractor which sits for long periods. Change the filter and very carefully wipe out the bowl with a CLEAN rag (try a white one, you will be surprised at what it looks like after). Best of luck.
