John Deere 4300 Fuel Guage Problem

My fuel guage doen't work on my JD4300 COMPACT UTILITY TRACTOR, anything I should look for before jumping to the conclusion it's either the sending unit or the guage cluster, which a local dealer said it would cost me around $500.00?

Two issues I thought maybe you all have experienced and may be able to help me out with on my 1999 JD4300 with 72" mid-mounted mower.

1. Fuel guage don't work, what is commonly the problem assuming on my own either the guage which requires me to buy the whole instrument panel, around $500.00 or sending unit; is there anything else I should look at first?
2. Smoking/foggy at the bottom section looking guages dash cluster, what's up with this

John Deere 4300 Fuel Guage Problem

I've had three 4000 series John Deere compacts,( 4300, 4310, 4410), the fuel guage didn't work on any of them. It's pretty much hillbilly technology, but I use a stick to measure the fuel level. One feature they do have is the easy start if you run out of fuel, just pour some fuel in and she will start without all thew priming etc. that a regular diesel requires. I had forgotten the cost of the cluster, that's too much, a wooden stick fuel guage is much less costly.
My guage cluster will fog if the tractor sits out in the rain. So long as it is in a shed the cluster doesn't fog,
Frank.

If you disconnect the wire from the sending unit and touch it to a clean ground with key on, the gauge should move to full if the gauge is good. If it does, you need a new sender. If it doesn't, be sure the wire is good between the sender and the gauge before you get a new cluster.

If you make the habit of filling with fuel at the end of using it also solves the issue.

Now this is strange.
My little Deere must have heard us talking about it, the fuel guage started working a couple days ago. It hadn't worked for years. Must be that mental teleprathey, or how ever you would spell that.
Frank.

It makes sense. My current vehicle always runs better when I price a new one.

KT:

How true, we priced a new Tahoe about a month ago. You can't get a new Trailblazer anymore, that's what I really wanted, they seem just the right size for us, the Tahoe and especially the Suburban are just too big.
Anyhow after I saw the trade figures for our 07 Trailblazer with 75,000 miles to a new Tahoe, 32,500. plus Tax title, and all that hooey. My goodness how sweet that
Trailblazer runs now.
Frank.
