 comparisons on Jd 870-97-1070

I am a new hobby farm with a ten acre parcel in Wisconsin. Wondering if some of you more experienced tractor people could give me guidance of which used tractor to purchase. It is a ten acre parcel in fairly heavy dark loam with some clay and land has not been plowed in over 20 years used for horse pasture not row crops. I have oliver 2-14 plow and nine shank cultivator on site. Wondering which size tractor you would recommend to prep this land for eventual hobby farm vegetable and fruit production the JD 870-970-1070. I like the 1070 but the 4wd at 3300 lbs might be a little heavy and compact the ground ? Your thots ? Thanx -Peter

Kirby;
3300 lbs. isn't very heavy when it comes to tractors pulling plows, harrows, discs, planters, etc. I'd suggest the 1070 as being the minimum. A 970 pulling a 2-14 plow in heavy clay might be a bit too much for it, any extra horsepower will never hurt.
There just isn't a farm situation that a four wheel drive can't make better, especially when you put a front end loader on the tractor, that's a day and night difference.
I think the front axle on a 4 wh. dr. has a non adjustable tread width at about 60 inches and the rear tread cn be adjusted to the same tread width which will work fine for planting, cultivating or any work in standard 30 inch row widths.
Frank.
