 790 vs 955

I am considering a new 790 vs a low hour used 955. What is the PTO horsepower on the 955. Could someone explain some advantages and disadvantages of both machines. I am going to use for aerating lawns, brush mowing and finish mowing. Thanks in advance.

I'm a hydro man, the 955 is the hydro. Drive each and simulate mowing around trees etc. see which you like. In this part of the country I couldn't get a used at a good price so for $400 more than used I went new. Laughing out loud

Yes, the 955 is a hydro and the 790 gear driven. They are about the same physical size and HP but the 790 is an economy machine. The 55 series are great mowing machines. Nothing against the 790, but I would go with the 955 if it's in good shape and the price is right. I almost bought a new 790 before I located a used 1998 855 with 140 hours on it. It's a great machine, although at 6'2" I'm a little cramped on it. I use it for brush hogging my lawn and about a mile of woods roads and paths as well as for loader work, with occasional backhoe digging. Actually, I wish I had the 955. My PTO HP is under 20 which rules out some 3 pt implements. I think both the 790 and 955 have at least 25 HP PTOs.

Paul, yes the JD 790 is an economy machine. But it is a well built machine also, just does not have the bells and whistles. I bought one 2 months ago and have not second guessed it one time. I have a 5 ft. box scrape and a 5 ft. Bush Hog SQ600 rotary mower. The only concern I had before purchase is the 815 lb. lift capacity of the 3ph (at 24 inch). This has not been a problem, even with the bush hog hanging off the back. I like the gear transmission, but I know a lot of guys like hst. Good luck. John

I love my 790, had it for a month and a half. I think the 955 is a great tractor and I looked for a used one for two years but the only used compacts around here are pricy and beat up. I think I read some where that the 55 series were designed for lawn care, making it an ideal tractor for what you plan to use it for. I picked a 790 because it will do what I need it to do and the price was right. I is a well built tractor and has loads of power. I use a 72" finishing mower and a 60" tiller, no problem. The 790 was about $3500 Canadian cheaper than a six year old 855 with 800 hours, cracked hood and beat up 60" midmount mower. Does your dealer have a 790 in stock, mine was ordered and it took five weeks to get. My dealer ordered another one for a customer who has to wait upto 90 days! This may also be a consideration for you.
Kevin K.

Something you might consider if possible, is to mow (if that is the main job of your future tractor) with a hydro & a gear tranny & you see what you like better. Every one has their own opion!
